POST-WAR INDUSTRY
FARMING AND HOUSING NATIONAL PARTY POLICY “After the war there will, be an overwhelming demand in Europe for foodstuffs and raw materials, which New Zealand can provide,” said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr S. G. Holland, speaking in Paeroa last night. “Therefore the future of our primary industries is bright if they are put in a sound position, but hitherto the Government has been grossly unfair to the primary producer.” Mr Holland said the Government had introduced stabilisation two and a-half years, too late and the dairy farmer had received only one halfpenny per pound' butterfat over 1909 prices. “We have to control the farmers’ costs and arrest the drift to the towns,” said the- speaker. "Incidentally, tell nje the name of anyone who works harder than the dairy farmer.”
However, said Mr Holland, farming could not absorb all the manpower available after the war. Therefore the National Party would create worthwhile employment, in which the worker could take a pride in'his work.
“But we must, choose an industry which does not offend our best customers,” said Mr Holland. “Therefore we have chosen housing. There should be a little more land round each house so that a householder can grow his own vegetables and keep his fowls.”
