STILL TOO MUCH

SPEEDING IN THE DISTRICT HEAVIER FINES ASKED FOR LORRY DRIVER BEFORE COURT Claiming that speeding was still prevalent in the district Traffic • Inspector R. B. Doggett appealed to the Magistrate, Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Paeroa Court on Monday for heavier fines to be imposed upon truck drivers and motorists who exceeded the present speed limit. The inspector claimed that in the past penalties had not been heavy enough and the speeding was resulting in considerable wear in tyres which it was necessary should be conserved. The above request was made when William Edward Vickers was charged with exceeding the speed limit fixed for lorries, 25 m.p.h., on February 27 on the Paeroa-Te Aroha Main Highway near Waitoki.

Inspector Doggett stated that he followed Vickers for about half a mile and found him to be travelling at 36 m.p.h. The Magistrate said he also found a nqmber of lorries exceeding the speed limit. He explained that he was on the road nearly every day and allowed to travel up to 40 m.p.h. but often he' could not pass lorries because they were travelling just as fast as he was.

A fine of £3 with costs 10s was imposed. Norman Keith Evans was fined £l, costs 12s, for carrying on a passenger service between Kaiaua and Clevedon otherwise than .in pursuance of his licence.

Inspector Doggett stated that Evans had taken a load of Maoris to a church for the unveiling of a memorial. -
