STOCK ON ROAD

COMPLAINT TO COUNCIL LETTER FROM SOLICITOR COROMANDEL-THAMES ROAD At the April meeting of the Coromandel County Council a letter was received from Mr C. N. O’Neill, solicitor, of Paeroa, on behalf of his client Mr A. Douglas of Ngatea, to ascertain if the council was prepared to do what was a plain duty in the matter of wandering stock. The letter also stated that the council did prosecute some Maoris for straying stock on roads, but a herd of dairy cows, a bull, calves and horses were often grazed on the stretch of road between Waikawau and Kereta and were not even taken off the road at night. This stock was owned by Mi’ McLoughlin, a former councillor.

Mr O’Neill pointed out that his client was determined that this menace should be removed from’ the main highway and had instructed him to take whatever steps were necessary.

It was proposed by the chairman, Mr C. C. Rae, and seconded 'by Cr. T. E. Simpson that Mr O’Neill be informed that the council would take action against the persons concerned if it can get sufficient evidence and suggested that the complainant assist the council and be prepared to give evidence.—Carried.
