RETIREMENT REGRETTED
The news that Mrs A. N. Grigg, member for Mid-Canter-bury, will not be a candidate at the coming general election will be received with very general regret. Her brief term of office as a member of Parliament saw Mrs Grigg establish, with surprising rapidity, a recognised place in that assembly. This was no doubt attributable, in part, to the Dominion-wide impression made by her maiden speech, which disclosed a breadth of view and grasp of basic principles that commanded attention.
It was the statement of one capable of rising above the level of personal or party interests, ready to find in the service rendered the only acceptable reward. Mrs Grigg has taken her full share in the work of Parliament,' and her efforts to place the women’s land army on a practical working basis . were evidence of a desire to aid in every way the national effort. The information gleaned during that recruiting campaign regarding the actual position on many farms proved of great value in many respects. But Mrs Grigg’s influence as a member of Parliament derives from the fact that her sincerity could not be questioned and that she stressed in the consideration of public matters those factors which rightly are regarded by the womenfolk as being of paramount importance. Her decision to retire will be generally and genuinely regretted.
