THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. "Public Service.” WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28, 1943 HOUSES, NOT FLATS

As an indication of what the public is thinking about the Government’s idea, mentioned by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, re--cently, of State flats to accommodate a returned soldier, his wife, and one child, may be quoted a remark by Dr. H. M. Wilson in a recent address to the Hastings Rotary Club. “What we want,” he said, “are houses that will hold the soldier, his wife, and at least five children.” The speaker was referring to the birth-rate and the need for encouraging larger families. “The State houses,” he added, “look quite attractive, but generally speaking, where are the arrangements for a family ? There should be a spare room for the girls and one for the boys.” These remarks support the impression that the Government is more concerned about meeting present emergencies in housing policy than planning for the realisation of ideal conditions for the rearing of families and the proper fulfilment of family life.
