To-day the first shipment of bullion from this district outside the Waihi Company for a great many years was made, when the Maratoto Mines, Ltd., forwarded its first consignment by the s.s. Taniwha.
At the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council on Friday last the chairman said that in response to the request to grant £2 for £1 as a subsidy on the appointment of an inspector, the Highways Board had replied that it was favourable to granting £1 for £1 provided the council was agreeable to the suggested grouping. A resolution agreeing to the grouping was carried.
There was quite a happy gathering at the Paeroa Distric High School on Thursday afternoon,when the mothers of the primer scholars gathered at the school to view the work done by these young pupils. They were entertained to afternoon tea by the teachers, and a pleasant time was spent.
The erection of the new infant classroom at the Ngatea District High School is practically completed, and the builders have left to do alterations to an Auckland school during the holidays. The painting of all the school and school buildings will be done shortly, and the carpenters will return in the new year to do several alteration jobs.
Mr F. W. A. Handman, who was engineer in charge at the Arapuni hydro-electric works when the construction was in the hands of Sir W. G. Armstrong-Whitworth, Ltd., has been appointed designer and consulting engineer for the construction'of a bridge across the lower Zambesi River in East Africa, which is to be 2i miles long and is estimated to cost £2,000,000.
•At the County Council meeting on Friday a communication was received fro.m the Highways Board stating that a two-way bridge (18ft) over the Komata stream was necessary, and the board was prepared to accept the council’s offer of £5OO towards the cost, equivalent to the proportion of £3 for £1 estimated on a 12ft bridge.
While hay-making at Kerepeehi on Saturday last Mr H. D. Jamieson was injured through the slipping of the boom of a hay lift. He was struck on the shoulder and had to be admitted to the Thames Hospital.
The competition recently held by the Paeroa Cadet Band to raise money for new instruments was won by Mr E. A. Porritt.
The Netherton Hall Committee held its annual Christmas dinner euchre tournament on Saturday last, and over 60 players took part. The first prizes (geese) were won by Mrs J. B. Whisker and Mr T. Vowles, and the second prizes (fowls) by Miss H. Whisker and Mr T. Richmond.
The Waihi Beach road will be in fairly good shape for the forthcoming holiday traffic, states the “Telegraph.” A gang of men is at present engaged in quarrying down material from a high rocky bank skirting the gorge section of the road, and this is being transported by the borough’s lorry for spreading on the stretch nearer to the beach.
