TURUA CARNIVAL.

KOPUARAHI DISTRICT WINS. KING AND QUEEN CROWNED. The Turua Plunket Society’s baby king and queen carnival, which has been running for several months, was brought to a close at 5 p.m. yesterday at the conclusion of a very successful fete in the Town Hall. In the evening it was announced that the candidates representing the KopuaraKi district had secured the most votes, and later •Master Robert Hale, on behalf of Master Rex Law, and Miss Marie James were crowned king and queen of the Kingdom of Turua. The value of the votes polled were: Blue (Kopuarahi), £B3 18s 8d ; Red (Southern Area), £7B 13s ; and White (Turua), £69 3s, making a total of £232 14s Bd. It is proposed to use this money to meet maintenance expenses and to provide a Plunket rest-room in Turua. The Fete. At the fete in the afternoon each of the districts had stalls in the hall, and brisk business was done. The produce stall was conducted by the Southern District, and was naturally decorated with red colours. Mesdames J. Thrupp, J. Miller, junr., K. Fox, and P. R. Henry were the vendors. Alongside was the cake stall, run by Mesdames J. G. Miller, L. James, B ; .McMillan, L. Mouldey, and L. Baigent, of Kopuarahi, and decorated in blue ; and near the stage the Turua committee had decorated t he sweets stall in white and gold, Mesdames E. Hill, H. Hill, Teece, and Miss I. Griffiths being in charge. On the stage was the refreshment stall under the charge of Mesdames T. White, L. Henwood, F. Loader, J. Hamilton, and L. Pentecost, and in the middle of the hall was Sister Sheridan’s Christmas-tree laden with gifts for all the babies that had been born in the Turua Nursing Home. All the district committees had members organising raffles and competitions, and the money they collected must have been considerable. During the afternoon a baby show was held, Sister McLean, of the Maternity Annexe, Thames, being the judge. Mrs D. Braizendale’s baby was awarded the prize in the over six months old class, and the for the under six months old class went to Waitakaruru', to Mrs J. Godkin’s baby. A special* prize was awarded Mrs L. Berney’s twins. Prizes for the best decorated tricycle and child’s perambulator were won by Master Tynan and Miss Marie Sweet. Competitions. During the evening the results of the rest of the competitions were announced as follows : — , Weight of cake, 51b Boz, Mrs Sweet (51b 7Joz) ; peas in bottle, 493, Mrs F. J. Hayward (495) ; peas in bottle, 215, Mrs Lemme (214) ; beans in bottle, 231, L. Nicholson (231) ; lollies in bottle, 210, J. D. Sheridan (210). Raffles. Art tray cloth, Mr H. C. Christie, No. 68 ; dressed doll No. 1„ P. Williams, No. 2 ; dressed doll No. 2, C. Kennedy, No. 79 ; dressed doll in cot, D. Mules, No. 16 ; hand-made cosy No. 1, C. J. Dean, No. 13 ; hand-made cosy No. 2, Miss A. Hill, No. 90 ; cushion No. 1, A. Miller, No. 7 ; cushion No. 2, Miss M. King, No. 99 ; D'oyley No. 1, Miss Richardson, No. Ill; D’oyley No. 2, Miss V. Stella, No. 69 ; D’oyley No.' 3, Mrs P.'Thrupp, No. 4 ; art table-centre, Mrs Bayliss, No. 57. The Coronation. The coronation ceremony was very well carried out, particularly when it is considered that the result of the competition Was only known three hours before. Credit is due to Mrs P. R. Henry for her organisation. A throne was arranged on the stage. The herald, Miss Dora Walker, blew a trumpet call and announced the approach of the Royal procession. This comprised Their Majesties’ Champion /Master Gordon Henry), the Lord High Chamberlain (Master Alex Wilson), the Lord High Chancellor (Master John Durman), and the King and Queen Elect, Master Robert Hale, acting on behalf of Master Rex Law,and Miss Marie James. The flower-girls were Misses Fay James and Pauline Marceau. Attending the Royal pair were the Princess Patricia Thrupp and Prince Harold Sutton, of Turua South, and Princess Ngaere Hill and Prince Selwyn Gibson, of Turua Town. Their flower-girls were the Misses Helen Bagnall, Gwenda Loader, Shirley Jones, and Gwen Clotworthy. The pages were Misses Allison Henry and Allison Walker, and Masters Ronald Mouldey and Douglas Reid. The ceremony was simple. The proclamations were read by the Lord High Chancellor, the regal emblems were presented, and the singing of the National Anthem brought it to a close. The Concert. The concert items were as follows : Chorus, school children, “The Bells”; playlet, primer children ; Maori songs and dances, Misses Phyllis and Rosina Watene ; recitation, Miss V. Loader, “Binkie”; piano solo, Miss Olwen Murray; recitation, Miss Frances Goodwin, “The Windmill”; chorus, school children, “The Huntsmen” ; recitation, Miss Emily Reid, “Hunting Bears”; violin solo, Master Ray Henry ; playlet, Miss L. Loader and Master A. Wilson, “Fraidy Cat” ; part song, school children, “Our oars are clashing.” The attendance during the evening was very large, the hall being practically filled. Mr P. R. Henry, who presided and made the announcements, expressed the thanks of the branch to the people who had assisted by work, donations, and patronage, thereby enabling an unprecedented sum to be raised in Turua. The evening’s function concluded with a dance, the music for which was by Mrs Mules’ orchestra.
