NGATEA. PRESENTATIONS TO TEACHERS. Evidence of the good feeling existing between the staff and the pupils of the Ngatea District High School was shown yesterday afternoon, when several presentations to teachers were made. The headmaster, Mr W. Chappell, M.A., received a Swan fountain pen from his classes, Standards V. and VI.; Mrs Reid received a cushion from her classes, and Miss Sibley was presented with a bottle of bath salts and a box of handkerchiefs, by the children of Standards I. and 11. Mr R. C. Abel, of the secondary department, was given a smoker’s companion as a wedding present from the high school pupils and a bedroom clock from the staff of the school. The latter presentation was made in the teachers’ room, where the headmaster, Mr Chappell, entertained the staff to afternoon tea and took the opportunity of bidding farewell to Miss Burns, of the secondary department, who has been notified of her transfer to Kaitaia, and to Miss Sibley, who will not be returning to the Ngatea school. CHURCH SOCIAL. The monthly dance organised by the Anglicans of Ngatea and held on Wednesday evening attracted quite a fair number of dancers from all parts of the Plains. Mr J. Neate was M.C., and the music was supplied by the Ngatea orchestra. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Chatfield and Mr M. Martin, and the euchre tournament by Miss Dent (1) and Mrs A. R. Vowles (2) in the ladies’ section, and by Mr W. Williams (1) and Mr L. Cotter (2) in the men’s .section. During the supper interval Mr C. S. Foster expressed the appreciation of' the social committee to Mr J; Neate, who had always been willing to come out over his unmetalled road to act as M.C. for the dances. The committee desired him to accept an electric kettle as a mark of its indebtedness to him. The items rendered were: "I hear you calling me ” and “ Berceuse,” by ' Mr Greenslade ; “The Swallows,” by Miss Una Thompson; “A Tragedy in Five Acts,” a monologue, by Mr G. Pinnock ; “ Our Ben Adams ” and “Somebody’s Mother” (recitations), Miss Ray McClure ; “You ’Eard,” Mr E. Duffin ; “Revenge,” Mr F. Pinchess; “Melodrama” (monologue), Mrs G. Connell; “Flight of Ages,” Mrs C. Hayward; “A Comedian and his Mother” (comic sketch), Messrs E. Duffin and G. Pinnock; “Go along Mule,” Mr C. Clark. Mr E. Duffin, by special request, sang “A Working Mqn,” and the programme concluded with a selection played by the “Hawaiian Trio”—Miss 11. Harris and Messrs Donaghy and Hughes. Mr A. McClean, who presided, thanked all the artists for their assistance, and concluded by wishing Mr Craig a speedy recovery from his long illness. The hall was then cleared for dancing, musia being rendered by Mrs Henderson, Miss G. Williams, and Mr G. Connell, and by Mr McClean’s wireless speaker in conjunciton with Mrs T. Elliott’s gramophone. A delicious supper handed round by the ladies* committee and other willing helpers. • The proceeds totalled approximately £l5. WAITAKARURU. BENEFIT CONCERT. A benefit concert, organised by Mr F. Pinchess for Mr A. Craig, a young Waitakaruru man-who had his leg broken in an accident in March last, and who has been in hospitals practically ever since and is still far from being able to work, was held in the Waitakaruru Hall on Monday evening. The building was packed, and the entertainment, provided by the local people, proved very enjoyable. KOPUARAHI. PERSONAL. Miss Leila Green,, Kopuarahi, papil of St. Joseph’s Convent, Thames, was successful in the examination of T.CU. in gaining her Licentiate Diploma.
