BOROUGH COUNCIL.

OPERATIONS DURING MONTH. REPORTS ON ACTIVITIES. The following reports for the month were submitted by the respective committees to the Paeroa Borough Council meeting last night and adopted :— BOROUGH WORKS. “The usual maintenance has been carried out during the month. “Owing to the unsettled weather most of the improvement work has been held up, and the principal activity has been in connection with the reconditioning of Station Road. “The culvert has been laid in Ainslie Road and the gully filled to a satisfactory grade. Further improvement is being made to this street by the Ohinemuri Jockey Club, which is piping and filling the western boundary. “Work on the cenotaph is proceeding, and the earthwork on Primrose Hill is almost complete. “Sufficient metal is now on hand for Station Road, and some further 100 to 150yds is being crushed for other streets. “The fences and gates, etc., have been completed at the hospital, and a start made in laying the gutter tiles. “The bad corner near the Paeroa Hotel has been attended to and will be open for traffic in a few days’ time. “The work as arranged to give access to Mr Jaspers’ property is well in hand.” FINANCE. “Your committee begs to report that during the month the revenue in the District Fund Account amounted to £1331 7s lid, and the expenditure to £2115 13s 3d, which includes £785 3s 4d interest and principal due to the State Advances Office and £284 19s 3d for bitumen for main highways, etc. We recommend that the attached accounts be passed for payment, after which the debit balance, including advances made to loan accounts, will amount to £984 5s Id. “The expenditure in the various loan accounts during the month was as follows : Sewerage Loan Account £5, and Water Improvements Loan Account £l. “The respective positions of the various loan accounts after payment of the above accounts will be : House Sewerage Connections Loan Account, debit, £164 3s lid; Water Improvements Loan Account, credit, £23 12s 7d; Sewerage Loan Account, debit, £134 4s 5d ; Street Improvements Loan Account, credit, £2l Os Bd. “Ten per cent. Penalty.—We recommend that the 10 per cent, penalty be imposed on all rates which remain unpaid after Friday, January 17,1930. MUNICIPAL BATHS. “Your committee wishes to report that the low spring-board, has been renewed; also lighting facilities at the entrance to the building provided for. “In view of the appearance in Paeroa of the Australian champion swimmers (at a carnival held on Monday, the 9th inst.), the Paeroa Swimming Club applied for better lighting over the bath and a high diving board.! The estimated cost of the requirements was gone into carefully, and even with a proposed subsidy from the Swimming Club we considered the cost more than the council would entertain. The president of the club was again approached to make a higher contribution towards ? the cost, and his club then agreed to pay £lO. In view of the larger contribution from the club the Baths Committee decided to proceed with the work, which has been completed by Mr Chamberlain. “Exceptionally cold weather during the past month has resulted in the bath takings and attendance showing 'a decrease. However, the coming summer months should show a decided improvement.”
