WAIOMIO PARK.

SUGGESTED QUEEN CARNIVAL. PAEROA HELP SOLICITED. The following letter from the Mayor of Thames, Mr W. Bongard, to the Mayor of Paeroa, Mr W. Marshall, was read at last evening’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council :— “On several occasions I have had the pleasure of a conversation with you on the matter of financing the acquisition of the Waiomio Park, and your remarks have been very encouraging and greatly appreciated. For your information I wish to say that several of us have recently visited various parts of the district with the object of promoting a queen carnival for the purpose of raising necessary funds. The response has been very gratifying, and matters are advancing enthusiastically. I would be very pleased if you could arrange a meeting between yourself and representatives of Paeroa and our representatives to talk matters over and see what assistance your district can give us. We would be very grateful to have your district’s co-operation.” The Mayor said that arrangements had been made to hold a meeting, but it had to be abandoned owing to his illness. He thought that the council should meet Mr Bongard. The object was a worthy one, and he was perfectly satisfied that the public of Paeroa would appreciate the area at the Waiomio beach that the endeavour was being made to reserve. Cr. Silcock was of the opinion that it was not a right time just before Christmas. It was no good putting forward a queen unless they were all prepared to push and endeavour to win. Cr. Edwards said he had been in conversation with Mr Bongard, who had agreed not to run a queen for Paeroa, but to ask Paeroa people to give what help they could to the Thames Valley queen. Cr. Hare considered that it was not a convenient time for Paeroa to do much, in view of the recent carnival and the approaching .festive season. On the Mayor’s motion, seconded by Cr. Hare, it was decided to meet Mr Bongard when convenient and discuss the matter with him.
