SWIMMING.
SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL. A GOOD ATTENDANCE. The first carnival of the season was held in the Paeroa Municipal Swimming Baths on Monday evening, and despite the bleak weather there was a good attendance to see Noel Ryan and Owen Griffiths, the Australian swimmers, in action. The visitors and their manager were officially welcomed to Paeroa by the deputy-Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards. In according the welcome Mr Edwards expressed the hope that they would have a successful tour through New Zealand, and that the young New Zealanders would profit by their visit. As a result of the visit he felt sure much good would be done the sport of swimming. He also extended congratulations to the swimming club on its enterprise in arranging the carnival so that the Australian visitors would be seen in action in Paeroa. The manager of the tour, Mr C. Bryant, representing the N.Z. Swimming Council, replied to the welcome and expressed their pleasure at being able to visit Paeroa. On' arrival he had been shown the baths, and he was greatly impressed with them ; in fact, they were the best he had seen. From the enthusiastic welcome and hospitality they had received he felt sure they would long remember the visit. He was greatly impressed by the enthusiasm of the club and its officials, and would have no hesitation in recommending at some future date the holding of a New Zealand championship in Paeroa. The big event of the evening, namely, 100yds handicap, attracted a good deal of attention. In this Griffiths had to concede 13s to a limit man. I|e swam well until the last turn, where he lost ground through making a bad turn. He made a great effort to catch Strange, on Bs., but was just beaten by a touch. His time, considering the cold water, was very good, being 58 2-s§. The exhibition by O. Griffiths of trick diving and swimming strokes was keenly applauded. The diving generally attracted keen interest, as also did the races in which the Australians took part. In the 220yds Ryan put up a good performance, considering he had to swim the last 150yds on his own. Following are the results of the races :—
