PATETONGA ROADING.
WEATHER DELAYS METALLING. IMPROVING KAIHERE ROAD. Slow'progress continues to be made with the metalling of the lower main road , Patetonga, and since the work was commenced at the beginning of last month only about half a mile of the first course has been laid. Of late the slow progress has been due to the weather interfering with the carting of metal from the quarry, which is over three miles from a metalled road. In the early part of last week up' to 80 yards of metal was carted daily, but in the latter part of the week no carting whatever was possible. The Lands Drainage Department has several gangs of men at work in the district. There are small gangs engaged in claying the road preparatory to metalling, and a small gang is spreading metal or draining, whilst a larger gang is engaged in improving the road to Kaihere. The sharp corner at the northern end of the lower road is being rounded off, and considerable filling is 'being put in at the corner where the lower road joins the hill road. As it is proposed to bring the whole road to Kaihere up to main highway standard much work will be necessary in widening cuttings, improving grades, and straightening out curves both horizontal and vertical.
