WAIOMIO PARK.
PROPOSED QUEEN CARNIVAL.
PLAINS COUNTY TO CO-OPERATE
The Hauraki Plains County Council at its special meeting on. Wednesday decided to co-operate with the Thames Borough Council and the people of Thames in securing for the public as a park an area ,at Waiomio, on the Thames Coast Road. With that object the council decided to organise a local queen carnival to raise funds
for a Hauraki Plains queen in the x. larger district carnival. The subject was brought before the council by Cr. Madgwick, who reported that the Mayor of Thames had interviewed several members of the council during the morning with a ■ view to getting the council’s co-opera-tion either as a council or as individuals.
The chairman pointed out that the council could only assist financially W out of its unauthorised expenditure ' account, but its limit was almost
reached. Crs. Mayn and Parfitt expressed sympathy with the scheme, and hoped the people of the Plains would enter whole-heartedly into the carnival. In reply to Cr. McDuff the chairman said that so far no other local body had given the matter more than its moral support. . Cr. Madgwick suggested that the members of the council be the Hauraki Plains committee, with power to add to their number. The chairman thought the idea a good one.
Cr. Madgwick’s suggestion was put
in the form of a motion and, after be- / ing seconded by Cr. Mayn, was carried, w Cr. Madgwick asked for suggestions } on the question of holding a queen ' carnival. He would suggest that four or five areas be formed on the Plains and a local carnival be arranged ‘to raise funds for the Hauraki Plains queen.
Cr. Motion said it would be easier and cheaper for each councillor to put in a £lO note. Mr Madgwick moved that Mr Mahoney be asked to act as secretary and treasurer to the committee. Mr Harris suggested that the Plains be divided into two areas with the river as the boundary. The winner of this local carnival would become the ■iHauraki Plains queen. Jf? This was agreed to. Messrs Harris and Madgwick were delegates to the central 'executive, and Messrs Harris, Madgwick, Mahoney, and Basham were apappointed organisers fo rthe district.
