PLAINS COUNTY.
SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING.
ROADING SCHEMES ADVANCED.
A special meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council , was held on Wednesday last, Cr. C. W. Harris presiding over Crs. J. Motion, W. E. Hale, W. Madgwick, C. W. Parfitt, W. McDuff, A. S. Fisher, J. F. Mayn, the clerk (Mr E. A. Mahoney), and the engineer (Mr F. Basham). Mangatarata Roading. The first business was to pass a special order applying to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to take a poll of ratepayers on the question of raising a special loan of £3OOO over a special rating area for metalling certain roads about Mangatarata. In reply to Cr. Parfitt the clerk said that objections to inclusion in the rating area could be lodged up till November 18. To Cr. Mayn the clerk stated that the rate necessary would be 31d in the £ if the period was 15 years, and 3d in the £ for a 20-year period. The district had been fixed at a meeting of ratepayers, and any objection to the area could be made through the proper channels, but it would mean delaying the work. The resolution was carried. Kerepeehi Roading. A similar resolution respecting the proposed ioan of £6OO wor metalling certain roads and streets in the Kerepeehi township was also carried. Waitakaruru Bridge. ■ An agreement was finalised under which the council agreed to pay an annual instalment of £7O to the Main Highways Board in respect to the construction of the Waitakaruru strream canal bridge. The Gluepot Bend. When an opportunity was given for the introduction of general business Cr. Mayn asked whether the county engineer had made an estimate for the cost of deviating the KaiherePatetonga road at the Gluepot bfend. The engineer said that the Lands Drainage Department had gone thoroughly into the matter, and he concurred with the estimates prepared by ' the departmental officers. The lands drainage engineer had written to the council to the effect that the cost of a filling would be £950 more than the estimated cost of improving the existing road. Cr. Mayn expressed the opinion that the county engineer should investigate the matter. The engineer said he was in sympathy- with the view expressed by the department that it would be foolish to so improve this section of the road that it would be far and away better than the rest of the road. Cr. Mayn argued that as the Lands Drainage Department had earned £3OOO on the Patetonga Riding metalling scheme it should do something to this bend. The engineer said that this was not included in the schedule of work under the Patetonga scheme, but the work would be done if the council desired and paid the cost. It would not be subsidised at £4 for £l. On the motion of Cr. Mayn it was decided to ask the Lands Drainage Department for details of the alternate schemes, and also for details of the department’s programme for the present season.
