POWER BOARD BEATS RAILWAY
The game between the Thames Valley Electric Power Board and the Railways effectually rung down the the curtain of the Rugby season in Te Aroha last Saturday.
The game was hard, but lacked science and combination, and at times provided a certain amount of amusement. Railways, who fielded only 13 men, felt the handicap considerably, and played a game of concentrated defence almost from the start, but occasionally their drives bore fruit and some good work was seen. Smardon and McQuarters were their outstanding men, while Ifwersen and Howard shone in the Power Board team.
With the winning of this match the Sprague Shield becomes the property of the Power Board.
Fairly solid midfield work opened the game, but the weight of the Power Board soon began to tell, and in the face of strong forward pressure Kerr forced. From the kick-out Railways suffered a penalty for a deliberate throw into touch. K. Ifwersen converted. Power Board 3, Railways 0. Sent from the tight by Wrigley, the ball travelled from Howard to Ifwersen, to Spinks, who dropped it close to the line. From the line-out McGirr snapped up and dashed across. K. Ifwersen converted. Power Board 8, Railways 0. Smardon at full-back had a busy time, continually finding touch in the face of strong Power Board attacks, and eventually forced to relieve the pressure. McQuarters broke away and reversed Railways’ fortunes by a great sprint foi' the line. Tight play followed, and Smardon found an opportunity to dash across for a try-. Campbell failed with the kick. Power Board 8, Railways 3. McQuarters was again prominent in some clever defensive work, but an infringement gave Ifwersen another chance, but he failed to score. Railways had to defend strenuously, some good kicking by Smardon and a penalty alone saving the situation. Close to the goal Ifwersen received in close play and drop-kicked the ball between the posts. Power Board 12, Railways 3. Rackham and Brown carried play to the Power Board’s territory, and a dangerous drive was frustrated by Ifwersen, who centred. Howard led the Railways forwards on attack, but on the ball going out the game concluded. Mr B. Neil, Paeroa, was referee.
