RIFLE SHOOTING.
PAEROA DEFENCE CLUB. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The executive committee of the Paeroa Defence Rifle Club met on Monday night, when Mr F. C. Hubbard, president, presided over Mr ,R. 1. Wells, deputy-president, Captain H. Simmonds, and Riflemen W. A. Reid, L. Morris, and A. A. Jenkinson (secretary). A statement of finances submitted by the secretary showed the club to be in a very sound position. It was decided to pay the markers 7/6 each for marking the targets on the opening day. Accounts totalling £6 13s 6d were passed for payment. Miniature Shooting. It had been decided to close the miniature range after the shoot on Wednesday, 23rd inst., thus leaving only two more nights’ shooting. The committee, being desirous of having something bigger than usual to wind up a very successful season, decided to put on a two-night shoot, with prizes for the three best aggregates including the handicaps, Ist 10s, 2nd 7s 6d, and 3rd ss, with an entrance fee for the two nights of 6d. .303 Shooting. It was resolved to adopt the automatic handicapping system for the .303 range, and that the standard be 64 for a seven-shot s\oot and 90 for a ten-shot shoot, at short ranges up to 600. The club competitions would be started on Saturday, November 16. The four Saturdays from now to that date would be devoted to practice shooting over all the ranges, Saturday, 19th inst, to be at 300 and 500 yards, 26th inst., 500 and 600 yards, 2nd prox., 300 and 600 yards, and on 9th prox., at 800 and 900 yards. The shooting on the 26th inst. would also be beneficial to those members intending to make the trip to Waihi on Labour Day to take part in the offeial opening of that club, to which the members of this club have been invited, as the shooting at Waihi would be over these two ranges. Trophies Presented. The president intimated that he would present a trophy for competition and that the committee be at liberty to allocate it to any range and on any date. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded him for the offer. Mr H. M. Shand also advised, through the secretary, that he would be pleased to donate a trophy to the club. This was received amidst acclamation, and it was resolved to write and thank him. The secretary was also instructed to write and thank the Paeroa Hardware Company, and Messrs, Brenan and Co. Ltd., for the trophies which they had generously donated to the miniature club. Engraving of Samuel Cup. The necessary engraving required on the cup presented by Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., was left in the hands of the secretary, the nanie of last year’s winner, Captain H. Simmonds, to be also engraved on it. It was decided to have this cup a challenge cup for club championship, and not to be won outright.
