PAEROA BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held on Thursday evening, His Worship the Mayor, Mr W. JJprshall, presiding over Crs. H. Bray, P. E. Brenan, E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt, H. J. Hare, H. M. Shand, W. E. Ward, and Mr W. C. Alexander, town clerk. Cullen Street. Mr N. C. Busby, Cullen Street, asked that, something be done urgently to furnish either a footpath or a reasonably passable roadway from his residence td Hill Street. As a result of an inspection by the visiting committee it was decided to inform Mr Busby that the work would be commenced in the near future. Fraser Street. The N.Z. Co-operative Daijy Co., Paeroa, drew further attention to the bad condition of Fraser Street, and requested that repair work be put* in hand as soon as possible. The management of the company wished to ascertain from the council the nature of the repairs proposed, and just how" soon the work could be put in hand and completed. It was decided to inform the com,pany of the council’s proposals to repair the street for its entire length in the same manner as was being done at present.. Wood Street Footpaths. A petition from six ratepayers and residents in Wood Street earnestly and respectfully requested repairs to footpaths in their locality. The council decided that where required the footpaths should be attended to as soon as a vehicular crossing had been made at a certain property and water deflected from off the paths into the drains. Connecting Road. The Ohinemuri Jockey Club thanked the council for its resolution concerning the closing of the connecting road between Raroa and Ainslie roads, and agreed to the conditions contained therein. Opening of. Library. The* secretary of the Paeroa Public Library wrote on behalf of the committee stating the desirability of opening the library on Saturday evenings instead of Friday, owing to’ the change in the half-holiday. Confirmation of this proposal was desired. The proposal was agreed to. Highways Estimates. The Main Highways Board representative forwarded forms for application for Main Highways Boar! subsidy for 1929-30. The estimates as forwarded by the staff were approved Relief Works. The assistant engineer of the Public Works Department, Paeroa, advised that the council’s detailed proposals recently submitted for the expenditure of the £7OO grant for relief works had been approved. Ngahina Wharf. The assistant engineer of the Public Works Department, Paeroa, advised that the department had agreed to carry out the repairs to the sheet piling of the Ngahina wharf, and that the work would be commenced immediately. Tung Oil Trees. The Orchard Instructor, Depart-, ment of Agriculture, wrote stating that his department would have a limited number of tupg oil trees for distribution during the month. It was proposed for some of these trees to be grown in different localities to test their suitability to those parts, together with their commercial possibilities. The trees were very ornamental, and the letter went oh to give instructions as to planting, etc. It was suggested that domains be tried, or similar permanent plantations. If the council cared to take 25 or more of the trees the orchard instructor would be pleased to inspect the proposed area, and if found suitable, trees would be forwarded in time for early spring planting. The council considered that a trial would be justified, and that further, information on the trees should be requested. Paeroa Hospital Grounds. The Thames Hospital Board informed the council that it’s scheme for the laying out, excavating, and levelling of the grounds around the Paeroa Maternity Hospital, as submitted to the board by Mr .P. E. , Brenan, had been authorised by the board. A resolution expressing apprecia- , tion of the board’s action and prompt- 4 ness was passed. Criterion Bridge Loan. \ The audit office approved of the council’s draft of the Criterion Bridge loan validation.
