VETERINARY CLUB.

THE HAURAKI PLAINS BODY. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The committee of the Hauraki Hauraki Plains Farmers’ Veterinary Club held its monthly meeting at Ngatea on Thursday evening, Mr C. W. Schultz presiding over Messrs C. Vagg, W. Jones, R. Burke, G. Phillips, McCarthy, and C. A. Gibson, secretary. Stock Inspection. The Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Agriculture, wrote to Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., with reference to. the deputation which waited upon him at Ngatea recently concerning Mr Denize, the department’s inspector of stock at Thames, and informed him that the departmental officers subsequently discussed the matter very fully with Messrs W. Schultz and R. Burke and made it clear to them that it was the desire of the department to assist in every way possible. Since then the association, on their advice, had advertised for a properly qualified veterinary surgeon. In this connection it might be stated that both the Minister and the departmental officers appreciated the reliant spirit shown by the farmers, and were anxious to do all that was practicable to assist. It was very satisfactory to realise, the high opinion formed of Mr Denize by the farmers, and the question of some readjustment of stock inspectors’ districts, having in mind the Hauraki. Plains particularly, was at present under consideration from the stock inspection point of view. Subsidy Declined.

• The Minister of Agriculture wrote in reply to the club’s application for a subsidy of £2OO towards the payment of salary of the club’s surgeon. The Minister said that he fully appreciated the self-reliant attitude of the Hauraki Plains farmers in arranging to have a veterinary surgeon for the purposes of their immediate district, but this request for a subsidy really raised a very wide .question, and it necessitated the principle Involved being considered from the point of view of the whole Dominion. The general question of veterinary services would be given the very fullest consideration, and in doing so he would have regard to the position of the Hauraki Plains Club. Appointment, of Surgeon. Ten applications were received for the position of veterinary surgeon, and these were considered at great length, the number being reduced to four. Further inquiries will be made during the coming' week concerning these applicants, and the advice of the head of the Stock Division of the Agricultural Department will be sought.
