MOTOR-CAR BURNT.
ACCIDENT ON WAIHI ROAD. OCCUPANTS’ NARROW ESCAPE. On Sunday night while Mr and Mrs L. A. Doolan, of Paeroa, were driving back from Waihi in their saloon car, the lights fused about two miles from Waihi. While Mr Doolan was leaning down in an endeavour to adjust the lights the car got out of control and plunged over a bank, where it landed on its side. The vehicle immediately burst into flames, caused, it is surmised, by the carburetter or vacuum tank spilling petrol over the hot exhaust. The occupants experienced great difficulty in getting out, as the door had jambed. In the nick of time, in face of the approaching flames, they forced the door open and thus narrowly escaped death. The car, which was insured, burnt furiously, and was a total loss with the exception of a valuable kit of tools. These, however, were stolen before the owner returned to salvage them. Mr S. McCl inchy, who came along shortly after the accident, brought Mi* and Mrs Doolan to Paeroa. Mrs Doolan suffered from severe shock and Mr Doolan from badly burnt hands.
