PAEROA RUGBY UNION. WEEKLY MEETING. The regular meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union management committee was held on Monday night, Mr J. Crosby, chairman, presiding. Referees’ Reports. Mr E. Shaw stated that the match between West and Suburbs was the cleanest he had ever - had the pleasure to referee, and was played in the most friendly spirit. Considerable discussion centred around H. Moore, a senior East player, having been ordered off the field by Mr Jonas 'in the match against Pirates on Saturday. The referee stated in his report that the player was guilty of continual chipping, for which reason he ordered him off. On a motion being put to the meeting that Moore be cautioned, Mr W. Neil protested, maintaining that as a sporting body they should also hear the player’s side of the question. He had heard on responsible evidence that the referee, in front of witnesses, had apologiced to the player, saying his order was a mistake, and that he would not report the matter. This was substantiated by other speakers. Eventually, on Mr Walmsley pointing out that the East club had not protested against the referee’s decision within 48 hours, according to the rules, the club evidently had no desire to question or pursue the subject, the motion cautioning Moore was carried. An amendment, proposed by Mr Neil and seconded by Mr H. Robinson, that the referee be asked whether he did actually apologise was lost. Registrations. Several new players were regtered for East, Pirates, and Suburbs clubs. Affiliation. An application from the Paeroa District High School to be affiliated as 2 third-grade team in the union was not accepted, the majority opinion being that if the school entered it would take too many players away from the East third-grade team whose affliation and registrations had been accepted at the onset. Footballs for School. It -was decided, in reply to a request made by the Schools Union, that the union would do its best to add to the N.Z. Rugby Union’s subsidy for the purchase of footballs for use in the schools. Paeroa Referees’ Association. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs J. C. McDonald and E. Smith for the splendid manner in which they put the Paeroa Referees’ Association on a sound business foundation, Mr Neil remarking that these two men were towers of strength 'in Paeroa football. Grounds. The meeting agreed to go on with the necessary improvements on the ground, to be done by themselves. Gatekeepers. Messrs J. C. McDonald and W. Neil were appointed honorary gatekeepers for Saturday. The chairman intimated that last Saturday’s gate receipts had exceeded the previous one doubtlessly on account of this innova, tion. Third Grade. Mr E. G. Preston was appointed sole selector for the third grade. East and West were drawn to play on Saturday next, the balance of the third-grade draw to be arranged at the next meeting. It was decided to leave to Messrs Preston and Robinson the matter of weighing third-grade players. ! Referees and Players. I Mr McDonald, delegate from the Paeroa Referees’ Association, was asked to request the selector of the referees to see that the referees’ names were published in the “Hauraki Plains Gazette” on Wednesdays, so as to give them ample notification. The report and balance-sheet, was adopted, and was read as follows :— “The committee has much pleasure in once more reporting on a successful season last year. Tne number of teams participating in the competition between schools is not increasing, but the players are keen, and in all the matches the spirit of the game was all that could be desired. The boys undoubtedly played for the sake of the game, and the fact that a shield was at stake did not cause unfriendly rivalry, as, unfortunately, is often the case? -The boys are to be commended for their gentlemanly behaviour both on and off the field, their conduct generally being exemplary. “Finance.—The season ended with a credit balance of £1 17s lid. “Inter-School Competition.—This competition was won this year by the Hikutaia School team, which was undefeated throughout. The committee congratulates the Hikutaia team on the manner in which they played and on the friendly spirit in which the games were played. “Teams.—Four teams entered for the competition, two from Paeroa District High School and one from Hikutaia, while Netherton and Karangahake combined and entered, one team. “Footballs.—Six footballs were distributed among the four teams. “Fleming Shield.—This union was successful in winning the inter-union competition for the Fleming Shield, defeating Waihi af Paeroa and Piako at Te Aroha. “Matches with Tauranga.— The Paeroa Schools representative team played home and home matches with the Tauranga School team, travelling to Tauranga with the excursion arranged by the Paeroa Rugby Union. Tauranga returned the visit later in the season. Tauranga won both matches, but the games were played in the right Rugby spirit. “Roller Mills Competition.—Eight members of the union’s representative team were picked to represent Thames Valley schools in the Roller Mills Shield Competition, which was played in this district. Our boys acquitted themselves well in the team. “Thanks.—The committee desires to thank firstly the Paeroa Rugby Union, for subsidising the annual grant from the N.Z. Rugby Union towards footballs, thus making it possible for each team to have a football, and also for its wholehearted support throughout the season ; secondly, the Referees’ Association for referees for inter-union matches ; and, thirdly, all those who by word and deed encouraged the boys to play the game, play it hard, and play it fairly.” Election of Officers.
