KEREPEEHI SPORTS.
EASTER MONDAY’S OUTING.
ANOTHER SUCCESS RECORDED.
The Kcieepqhi Sports Association held its annual spirts-.at the Showground, Kerepeehi, on Easter Monday, there being over 200(1 pejoplc present. The sun shone brightly all day, but the weathqc was not hotThe sports. were, spectacular and keen, though the entries, particularly in the horse events, ware not up to those of previous years. The track was in good order, thanks to tlie rain on Friday night, but the; going was heavy for the runners after tlie surface had been cut up bv the horses. The Turua Band playqd. numerous selections during the day. and. a radio receiver at the refreshment booth broadcasted’ results of the races at Ellerslie!, and also music.
The chopping events, naturally, proved the greatest attraction as several of the well-known axemen were competing. The horse events, with the; exception of the Flag-race, lost muc,h of their attraction owing to being started some distance away from the spectators, and it was at the start that the novel features were introduced to prevent the events being classed as straight-out horse racers. 1.'(! .seven entries for the Flag-rac.e nececita c ■ three heats.. The first two were won by one can who had entered twice, and this ri.lqr tied in the final with the winner of. the third heat, but beat him in the run-off Two events that proved interesting were the pole-vaulting and the puttingrt'nesnot. Mr T. O’Carroll started the shot-putting by sending the 161 b ball 34ft 4in. No other competitor approached this for, a long time, except M. Alach, of Ngatea, until T. Rapana, of Kerepeehi, reached 35ft. O’Carroll anil Rapana then fought it out and O’Carroll won with the length of 40ft sin. A similar competition resulted in the pole-vaulting. J. Adlum. of Kerepeehi, and Hiliary Candy, of Kopuarahi, lost all the others in the 6ft-odd marks, and continued flying over until 7ft 10iii was reached- This proved their limit, for both failed when the bar was raised another three inches, ami it ' vas agreed to jump until one competitor failed 1 . Adl.um was the unlucky one. It was a pity that these two events were not put on earlier in the day, but it was necessary to keep the spectators from the running track until thq races were, over. The management, of the meeting proceeded smoothly and the programme was carried "out pretty well to time, though the chopping events were later than advertisqdl There were no protects or disputes, anfl no accidents. The ; principal officers were as follows :—
