NGATEA SCHOOL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Ngatea District High School Committee held its monthly meeting on Monday evening, Mr W. McJJuff presiding over Messrs R. AV. Vagg, R. Rowlings, W. Wylde, and E. C. Barriball (secretary). The headmaster, Mr AV. Chappell, was in attendance. Mrs Shaw wrote resigning her petition as caretaker, and in view of her long and faithful service the committee accepted the resignation with regret and granted her a month’s leave of absence on full pay. The secret tary .was instructed to send her a letter of. appreciation. The . chairman Was authorised to make an appointment. CARTAGE OF CHILDREN. Letters were received frelm the Education Board advising the acceptance of Mr G. Connell’s tender, at 37s 6d per school-day for the conveyance of up to 50. children from Waitakaruru and Hopai. The contract was for the, y-qars 1929 and 1930'. Mr Nicholson’s contract for the Kere-peehi-.Turua-Horahia service was for three years. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. A report on an inspection of the school made on August 15 by Mr G. H. Plummer was received. It commented as follows “The school is under capable management apd is soundly organised. The pupils are regular iii attendance, and the order, discipline, and tone are good. The general efficiency of the teaching ranges between very fair and good. The accommodation is sufficient for present requirements, and the are in getod order. The improvements recently effected to the grounds reflect credit on all concerned.” Continuing, the report stated tha.t the secondary department was ip a very fair state of efficiency. The pupils were regular in attendance, well-behaved, and diligent, and appeared’ to be anxious to avail themselves of the advantages of postprimary education. The accommodation at present was sufficient, but there was every indication that a second room would be needed next year. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster repeated that the primary school roll numbered 152; a decrease of ten. The secondary department had increased from 27 to 45, and an application had been made for another assistant. A relieving teacher might be appointed until a permanent appointment was made. The accommodation for the secondary depart-: ment was now taxed' to the utmost, and .when a second teacher, was appointed it would be essential to utilise a second room. It was desirable to get the board’s architect to visit thq school. MANUAL SCHOOL. The headmaster reported that the inspector, on his last visit, had suggested that an effort should be made to secure a manual and technical school for, the county. The inspected had pointed out that there were sufficient pupils at the Ngatea school to keep a woodwork instructor ;and a cookery instructor employed .two days a week, and there were sufficient pupils at the other, schools to keep* them employed for the rest of the week. The inspector had strongly advocated the matter. It. was decided to advise the Education Board that the cpinunittee coto sidered that the time had arrived tor the establishment of a manual training centre at Ngatea for the instruction of pupils of Ngatea and surrounding schools in woodwork and cookery. SCHOOL PICNIC. Arrangements for the annual picnic at AVaiomio Beach on Friday next were finalised. The headmaster reported that about £3O ha.d been collected. Tea would be provided, but parents were expected tpl provide provisions for their children. Buses would leave Ngatea at 9 a.m. AH prizes would be books.
