PICNIC AND SPORTS.

DAY AT WAITAKARURU.

ENJOYABLE OUTING.

The Waitakaruru Domain Board’s annual picjiic and sports, which are usually held on Boxing Day, but which this year had to, be postponed on account of the wet weather, were held yesterday, Anniversary Day. Mr R. A. Otter’s section near; the Pokeno Road proved an ideal picnic place, there being a flat hill-top surrounded on three; sides by native bushAs the sky was c.loudefl- the sun was not oppressively hot, and the 40 , 0-qdd people present had a quite, enjoyable time.

There was a refreshment stall on the ground, as well aS two side-shows. Sports for young children were organised by Mrs C. A. Hayward, all competitors receiving some award. Twenty motor-cars took part in the tilting events. An interesting programme of athletic events was held, the prizewinners being as follows: — 100yds Novice: First heat, P. McPherson 1, J. Ddbbs2; sec,ond heat, J. -McPherson 1, F. Barlow 2; final, JMcPherson 1, J. Dobbs 2. 220yds: N. Hedges 1, L. E. Hill 2. Domain Cup, 120yds: V. Hayward 1, P. Clark 2. 440yds: P. Clark 1, C. Rbuntree 2. 880yds : C. Ward 1, W. Dunn 2. lOOydls (open) : G. Connell 1, J. Jones 2. Married Ladies: Mrs J. Milling.ton 1, Mrs Be;nnett, senr., 2. Single Ladies : Miss. I. Sparrow 1, Miss D. Tower* & MOtor-tilting: Geared cars, A. Taylor 1, C. Schmidt 2; Ford cars, ALamjer 1, A. Taylor 2. Stepping the Chain: EL C. Adams 1, T. A. -McClean 2. High Jump: F. Barlow 1, C- Rountree 2. A weigh,t-guessihg, competition fof a c.ake was won by Mrs, P. Cannons, who guessed the correct, weight, 81b 9oz, and three ladies, .Mesdames Parfitt, Dick, and Vincent, who each estimated tied for second place. The programme was well conducted, and credit is due to the following officials : Secretary, Mr R- A. Otter ; assistant secretary, Mr N. Hedges; handicapper, Mr F. Stretton; judges, Messrs C. W. Harris and D. McAulay ; starters, Messrs S. P- Caie and G-. ,

Paton; stewards, Messrs G. Francis, E. Burling, L. Rounttep, P. Williams, A. H. McClean, and A. Henderson. Mrs C. A. Hayward ably controlled the children’s events.
