CONDITION IN AMERICA.

CHICAGO, January 7.

Numerous deaths are reported as the result of the intense cold' now prevailing over the mid-west. The temperatures range from zero to 19 degrees below zero in the Chicagp area, and are dropping to 20 degrees below zero in the cities in thq north-, west. Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, recorded 36 degrees below zero.

Relief. agencies throughout the area are besiteg.ed by poor, people seeking food and fuel. There, is acute distress, particularly in Chicago and Milwaukee.
