Sergeant J. Fitzgerald, cjf Hie Freeman’s Bay police Station, will succeed Sergeant McDonald, of Thames, who is retiring. • An unusual application was made by Seniv?-Sergeant Fox in the Invercargill .Magistrate’s Court the other ' morning, at the conclusion of a case which involved the sale of a stolen gramophone to a second-hand dealer (says the “Times’’). The senior-ser-geant said that the second-hand' dealer had bought the instrument in good, faith, and as the owner had a sense contributed to the theft by supplying his key to the accused, he should be ordered to pay the second-hand dealer for the gramophone. Provision was made in the Act for such a contingency. The secondhand dealer had not been in any way dishonest, and he ; was always ready to assist the police \to recover stolen property. The magistrate held that the second-hand dealer must lose the money he had paid for the gramophone, and re * marked that that was a risk which -every second-hand dealer must run.
