meeting of council. routine business. The monthly meeting of the PiaeroaBorough Council was held. last evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall), Crs. F. EL Flhtt, E. Edwards, J. W. Silcock, W. Turner, H.. J. Hare, and the town clerk (Mr. W. C. Alexander). STREET LAMPS. The Thames Valley Power. Bqard wrote stating that for the 12 months ending September 30, 1028, the average lamp life in the borough’s area was 755 hours, and a credit of 84 lamps being made. UNCLEAN BUTCHER’S SHOP. The Inspector M of factories wrote stating that an inspection of the premises occupied by a butcher in the town disclosed that the shcp was not kept in that state of cleanliness desirable in a shop handling foodi-. stuffs. He requested that the matter be brought before the -notice of the sanitary inspector, for the borough, so that he might take steps to have the premises thoroughly cleansed. : = The Mayor stated that the matter had been referred to the sanitary inspector, as requested by the inspector of factories. BREACH IDF HEALTH ACT. : The Inspec.tojr, of Factories wrote stating that some business premises in the main street had no sanitary conveniences for the use of female Employees. This was a breach of the Health Act, and also; of the Shops and Offices Act, and he asked the Council to take the matter up and , Insist on a compliance with the requirements of the Act. The Mayor stated that appropriate action had been taken. The' letter, was received arid the action taken was confirmed. ■; SWIMMING CLUB. A letter was received frcgm the paeroa Amateur ( swimming Club stating that arrangements had. beep made with the caretaker for him to be in attendance on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and every endeavour, would be made to safeguard the council’s property. A further, letter asking permission to erect a club notice-bOjard in the porch at the entrance was received, The matter was left in the hands ;qf the baths committee, with power to act. MAIN HIGHWAYS SUBSIDIES. The Public Works Departmnet’s resident engineer, Mr O. G. Thornton, at the request cf the Main Highways Board, wrote asking the council to make its claims regularly each quarter, or, if desired at more frequent ’intervals,-each mo,nth, and the final c,ldim for. the year early in March, including, expenditure up to the end of February. It was decided to co-operate as far as possible with the officers of the department and have the claims made as desired. The clerk of the Piako County Council wrote with reference to the circular letter from the engineer in charge of the Public 1 Works Department .that his council viewed! with great concern the fact that a pro-, pqsal to abolish heavy traffic fees should be entertained by the Goverh-j ment. If the council was of the same opinion as the Piako body, he-hoped that it would stress its views. It was decided to reply that the council bad- already made its objection. 4 ' DAMAGE TO TELEGRAPH CABLE. The district telegraph engineer wrote- complaining that a contractor who was engaged in excavating a roadway for a sewer connection damaged one of the department’s cables .with a> pick. As accidents of this nature caused 1 inconvenience to subscribers he suggested, as a special concession, that ip future all permits issued to drain-layers apd others should - include a clause emphasising the necessity of examining the department’s cabling and duqt plans before commencing wO-rk. On the motion of Cr. Edwards, sec-! ended by , Cr. Silcock, it was decidied that the request be granted. The Mayor, stated that the position did not affect Paeroa at present to any great degree, but it would not be long before underground cables were instituted in Paeroa. PICTURES ON CHRISTMAS DAY. Permission to show pictures on Christmas Day was sought by Mr. PJ. Jenrilngs. . Permission was granted, subject to the programme beinjg approved by the Mayor. ERECTION OF PETROL PUMP. Messrs Brenan and Co. applied for a permit to erect a petrof pump in connection with their, present installation. The' firm advised! that their, present, permit was for three tanks coupled to Ope pump, and they desired to erect another to work from one of the tanks at present installed. The permit was granted, subject to the usual conditions imposed by the council.
