PEKAPEKA ROAD DRAIN.

DEPUTATION TO BOARD. SPECIAL MEETING TO .BE HELD. At the last meeting of the United Drainage Board Mr Murray reported' on the visit paid to PekaRoad. The roadside drain was in bad and congestion was apparent above the culvert. Mr Heappy said that the weeds were very bad, and the new gate installed by the Public Works Department was proving very efficient. It was strangq that the department instalied floodgates of the type discarded by the board as unsatisfactory. Mr Hicks said that t'he work in the drain had' td be stopped on account of t‘he;i.e being too much water. Mr Heappy pointed out that the water from the Netherton district, and also the Elstqw district, was finding its why to the outlet. A deputation comprising Messrs C. Pearce, F. Barton, G. Mclntosh, P. Pearce, F. Chick, and Jordan waited upon the board on this matter, and was introduced by Mr Heappy. Mr Mclntosh asked that the board appoint an engineer, to devise a sc,heme csf drainage for thg ar.ea,. Whereas the area had good drainage prior, to the step-banking of the Waihou River it was now in a very bad state, and was flooded' at eve;ry rajn. Mr C. Pearce spoke concerning the Wairau Road end of the area, urging consideration of the; question of reaching a working, arrangement with the Elstow Board. His land drained to the Elstow area prior to the formation of the road, which acted'.as a, stop-bank, c.ausing his lowlying land to be. very wet. His section and those c.f his neighbours should be transferred to the control uf the Elstow Board. The Monganui outlet had never been of benefit to, tlie area except for, a few weeks after it had been cleaned. The extension of Handley’s or Pprritt’s drafln. or the improvement and' extension of the Pekapeka Road drains, migjit be suitable, but it would require an engineer’s survey to determine the ixjst proposal. The chairman said that tlie matter was serious, and apparently so complicated that it appeared to him that a special meeting to discuss the matter would be necessary.
