PAEROA RACES.

SPRING MEETING. A SUCCESSFUL OUTING. The inaugural spring meeting run by the Ohinemuri Jockey Club was held on the Paeroa Racecourse on Saturday in glorious weather. There was an attendance of upwards of 1009 people, and everything passed l off very smocjthly. The racing was good throughout, and in nearly every event the issue was fought out in the straight, with little separating the first three houses. One of the best races wa# perhaps tne last, in which Eh. Timi, lying third on entering the straight, fought hard and for the second time during the day was declared the winner. This veteran of the track received hearty applause c ; n both his wins. During the afternoon a programme of delightful music, was rendered by the Waihi Federal Band and was much appreciated. The running of a spring meeting is an experiment so far as the club is concerned, and in order to make- it a payable venture all the officials of the day were volunteers, and it must be said of them that they carried through their duties without a hitch. The absence of the totalisator was 1. It, but to create an interest in the afternoon’s racing sweepstakes we ; re the order of the day, and groups of people were to be seen drawing their “lot” from the hat. It is not generally known, but this form of creating an interest in the races is qdite legal on a racecourse up to £5. the proviso being that no investment greater than 5s c,an be placed in the sweep by one person, and also that there are no blanks or the promoter does not receive anything for his work.
