TO-NIGHT AND TO-MORROW NIGHT
UNCLE TOM’S CABIN
“Uncle Toni’s Cabin” is 75 years old. It has played a role, in the American theatre as well us the political arena, which ‘has entitled it to; certain traditions and prerogatives. That this has fastened upon the various characters in the play certain .standardised practices, make-up, and lines is not tC| be wondered at. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is, in all probability, the, most standardised play, and its characters more set in traditional grooves than those of any other theatrical production. Shakespeare c characters are interpreted entirely according to the ideas of the directors, of the actors who play the various roles, and the bankroll of the producer. But an “Unclje Tom’s Cabin” company which attempted to portray Uncle Tom, Eliza, Marks the lawyer, Simon Legree, Little Eva, and Topsy in any other manner than that set down by the long line of “Tom show experts would bq unthinkable.
There will be a matinee to-morrow (Tuesday) afternoojn.
