SWIMMING.

THE NGATEA CLUB. BATH . FOR BEGINNERS. Twenty-four members were present at the ajmlual meeting c.f the Ngatea Swimming Club on Tuesday evening, Mr J. E. Reid presiding. The: report recorded a very successful season. There were 49 financial members; and the financial position was, sound. Many young members had been taught to swim, and the several sports meetings had been productive of kese;nr ccimpetition and very good results. ’With a view to extending the spjope of the club’s activities a scheme was propounded by Mr Reid for providing a floating pontoon bath where children could become accustomed to the water and learn to swim in absolute Safety. A wooden bath 30ft long, 12ft wide, and' ranging 'in depth from 2ft to 4*ft was suggested. The sides an;d bottom would be. of an,d the structure would float in the river near the- club’s dressing sheds. It wcjiild carry over a ton dead weight. The cost qf the materials would be about £3O. The idea was warmly supported by all present, and a committee comprising Messrs, C. S. Foster, J. E. Reid, HHayward, J. King, H. B- Sparrow, W< Bqwerlng, and R. C. Abel wa.s set up to canvass, for funds for the purport Progress would, be reported- ih> a week’s time. Officer’s were elected as follows:' President, Mr J. E. Reid ; vice-presi-dents, Messrs C. S. Foster, J. King. W. Chappejll, and W. Bowering ; secretary and treasurer, Mr S. Mc,Kerchar ; club captain l , Mr R. C. Abel ; vice capta.in, Miss L. Luks; committee, Misses Rounfree and Chatfield, Messrs M-' Martin.. W. Beck, and H. Kirkmap. Subscriptions were fixed at 3s for ladies, 'ss for men, and 2s, for children' under 16 years qf age. An opening carnival will be held Qin a Saturday afternoon next month when the tide is suitable.
