Representatives qf the organised i winter sports clubs of Tauranga visited P.aer.oa on Saturday in return for the visit paid by Paeroa players on July 21, and interesting contests resulted. The journey was made by the ordinary express, which had been; increased j to twelve carriages, and 326 passengers were carried. The various teams were met at tile 'Station by Representatives qf the Pa,eroa clubs. On account of lack of available players Tauranga was unable tq send . a hockey team. i When Paeroa visited Tauranga in ; July Tauranga won all the contests witli the. exception of twq basketball games. The main attraction a.t the Domain was the senior representative - Rugby mutch. Both teams were weaker than usual. At first play was tame, but it improved as time went cn. and in the closing stages was. very interesting. The visitors were much superior in the back division, but the, tackling of the local men was very solid ,ajii|d the game was mostly a hal’d forward! .struggle. The te;a.ms were as follows :— • Tauranga.—Ngutai, McLeod, Tai- , kato, Nepia, Tu Tangitu, Phelan, J. Kelly, Turner, Keino, Haua, Firmin, -Moiri, Kohu, Mirrielees, g. Tanfeitu. 1 Paeroa.—Watepe, Maloney, Burke, i Wells, Nield, McKarvey, Smart, Taylor, Morrow, Brown, Carrick, Killgour, Frost, Jbhnso.n, Neil. Tauranga kicked off and tight play ensued in neutral territory until from a. scrum Maloney broke a,way. From a line-out an- 'intercepted pa?s let the visitors aw.ay. S'mar.t slhojt out op his own and lined. A fault jn a scrum gave Paeroa a free kick, which took play to the visitors’ posts. Long kicking followed. Tauranga gained ground and entered Paeroa twentyfive, but a penalty relieved. Faulty passing by the visitors let Paerqa, Jhr'ough.. Close play on Tauranga’? line terminated with a penalty toi the home team, but Taylor failed to score. Tauranga gradually gained ground, anld several scrums ensued on Paeroa’s line, a penalty relieving. After considerable close; play in neutral territory Kelly led his side on attack. The home; team worked t'Q the. other end by linie-play, Kelly relieving from a scrum, in open play Paeaen gained the advantage, but the Ta.uranga pack returned to midfield. The third! round was opened with. a L Tauranga passing rush, and play became. fa?t and interesting, both teams throwing the ball about well. Paeroa ■ had the better of the play, T'qylO-r and Johnson doing gtood work. Tauranga dribbld up the! field, and bright passing was indulged in, Nepia missing a score by being forced.' dut in touch. Taylor relieved! from tight play and Killgqur. continued on to midifield. Tauranga returned tq the attack, and several scrums were sqt on Paeroa’s line, but Tauranga could not break through the defence and Neil cleared with a speculator. After Burke had made a number of da,shed ddwn the line Ngatai returned play to ueutray territory, where open Pl a, y was indulged in until Taikato. crossed 'Paeroa’s I'ine. Nepia converted. Tauranga 5, Paerqa 0. Fraser replaced Burke; Tauranga was again attacking when the quarter ended. The final round commenced with open, play, until a long kick found the line in Paerqa’s territory. A Tauranga. attack found! P.a,eroa O|iit of position but Fraser at full-back saved. Turner btoke away on his own only tq be forced C;ut. Paeroa then got Tangitu being t'hie stumbling block, and play returned to the home team’s end far a force. set up a ? hot attack, but a breach in a scrum I brought relief and a long kick sent the ball to the other end, where Wells was unfortunate in not crossing the line. Paeroa failed with a penality kick, but shortly afterwards Taylor drop-kicked a good go,aj. Tauranga 5, Paeroa 4. The hojme team gained the advantage in, open play until Turner broke a,way but was caugjit on the line. A free kick relieved and close play followed in neutral territory till time wa? called. Mr ,F. T. V. Johnson was referee. THE JUNIORS. A WIN FOR PAEROA. The Tauranga. ami Paeroa junior representatives met on the No. 2 ground at the local domain, and after an (interesting game the hqme team wbn| by 12 points; to 6. The following were the earns :— Tauranga.— McPherson, Wqoller, Olsen, Ge:a,r, Findlay, Hammond 1 , Johnson, Cameron, Cameron, Jarvis, Castaing, Ayres, Alley. Paeroa. —Harper, Saunders, Masters, Rare, Moqre, Morrison, Mead, Taylor, Flatt, Aslher.oft, Fyson,, Carrick, Killgour, Robinson, Denize. Moore kicked off, and; play hovered in Tauranga’s territory. Offside play by Cameron 1 penalised the visitors and Moore kicked a gopd goja.l. Tauranga attacked, but an infringement allowed
Taylor to clear. In Iqpse play Gear centred, and after a good run Cameron scored. Castaiqg failed with the kick, which left both teams even With three points'. Pa.eroa gained the advantage in loose play, but Tauranga cleared by marking. A- dribbling rush by the visitors put Paerqa on the defensive until Fyson broke thrqugh and with a good run, went to the otheir end of the field. Bad Handling by the Paeroa backs spoilt an opportunity to score, and the Tauranga rearguard retaliated with a fine rus|h, but a foj»'w,a r d poss stopped the advance. The Paerqa forwards dominated the play after changing over, and when Tauranga had forced once Moore marked in a good position but failed to score. Harper let the visitors enter Paeroa’s territory, but later with a goqd line-kick reversed positions. An exchange of kicks thefn ensued, followed by Carrick scoring a good try as the result of a solq effort. Tavlor failed to convert. PaerPia attacked, and Tauranga forced twice before half-time. Sojon .after commencing the third round Ashcr.oft broke away apdl made a good run before: parsing in to Morrison for him tq cross' the line, making thg scores Paer.oa 9, Tauranga. 3. Tauranga attacked, and following a. penalty kick Paerqa, forced. A period of loose play saw the visiting, forwards break away in a great rush for Gear to score, but Hammqnd failed to convert. Immediately afterwards the home forwards combined well, and a rush down the field terminated in a score by Carrick. Mop re failed with the kick. Paeroa 12, Taurangq 6In the last quarter. Moore broke away and punted, but was beaten in the race for the ball. The Paeroa pressed, but the defence was sound a,nd Pl a y shifted to: neutral territory. Tauranga livened up and with good back play compelled Paesroa to force. The visiters renewed the pressure until Ashcroft relieved with a gojod line kick. Play was in Paeroa’s territory when the bell sounded. Mr J. M. Crosby was referee. The SCHOOLBOYS. Fine football was witnessed in the twq Sjchool marches. In the high school games tries were scored for Paeroa by Dare, Curtis, and Pqland, and Poland kicked a penalty gqal and converted a try. For Tkurahga Douglas fjeored and' converted a try secured by Jofinsbn. The primary schools match resulted in the visitors scoring two tries and the local! team one try.
