NGATEIA. GLEE CLUB’S CONCERT. The crowded audience at the Ngatca Hall last week on the- occasion of the thirff popular concert given by t.ne Ngatea Girls’ Glee Club, nndei’ the- direction of Mrs F. Basham, had every reason, to feel satisfied w'th the' bill of fare provided. Tlie musical medley “Pirqtcfe Up-to-date-,” based on the Gilbert and Sullivan opera “Pirates of Penzance,” included twenty-one items of pleasing variety ranging from euryt'hmics to •selections from grand opera, an;d tlie results achieved testified nqt only tq the ability and industry of the- players, but also to the judgment on, the part of the controller of’ the club’s destinies. Miss Un,a, Thompson, of Waitaka-r-uini, was heard in, seycra.l very pleading numbers, and was deservqclly encored. Miss Paul as the “Pirate Queen” contributed several squgs. Miss B. Basham and M'iss K. Barriball were beard in song and dialogue, and a patter song was given by Mils D. Hayward. The Rev. E. R. Alexander contributed a recitation, and songs by Messrs L. Squires ad. E. Cocks were aliso on the programme. Others who contributed were Misses M. Hayward, V. Bertelsen, J. Rowlings. David'-ou, Chatfield, E. Wheeler, U. Birkenhead, and a corps of eight policemen. Messrs Cocks, Tarver, Rowlings, Abel, Alexander, Chappell, Schultz, .a,nd Squires.
The secqnd. part of the programme was the farce “My Turn Next,” e.n limiting piece in which the village chemist. Taraxicum Twitters (Mr RC-. Abel), conjectured grave' misgiviilte: concerning the widow (Mrs F. Basham) he had just married. Peggy, (Mis.s D. Hayward), his housekeeper. Farmer Wlieate’i'r (Mr E. Cocks), and a commercial tiavMlej (Mr E. Alexander) had known her by different names, as her late husband had been in. the habit, of disappearing to; dodge his. creditors. Her action's when she inveigled him into signing a blank cheque, and when she handled a gun. a.nd! a knife, made, h’m wonder when it wquld be his turn to be done away with. As Tim Bolus, the chemist’s assistant. Mr W. Chappell was splendid. Mr Abel played a, difficult part in a a very creditable manner, and Mrs BaS|bam sho,wed that she could act as well tijS direct. Miss Paul filled a minor role satisfactorily.
