FLOOD DELAYS PLANTING.
GANG CLEARING SCRUB.
The unemployed men who were sejnt to Hauraki Plains to plant flax on the Government land near the. Kaihere La.niling have not yet commenced that work, but havle, been employed in laying a tramline and cutting tea-ties on the Kerepeehi block. The f!ax land is ill the. ponding area created to control the amount of w.a,ter in the I'owley reaches of the Piako River, and as it w,a,s only on Wednesday that the flood commenced to fall, it will be the middle of next week before; 11.a.x--planting can be. commenced.
The overseer, Mr C. Bertelsen, reports that the 38 ’ men in the camp are working well, and l are not giving any trouble. With the. exception of four, all are drawing 12s a day, for many single men have others dlepepdent on them. Five men left suddenly of their own accord.
