GOLF.
LAST SATURDAY’S GAMES. PAEROA DEFEATED BY TAURANGA A team of ten ladies and te-n men, representing, the Paeroa Golf Club, journeyed to Tauranga on Saturday to trj- conclusiions with the Tauranga Club members. On arrival at Strand the visitors were met by the president of the local club (Mr Phelan), secretary (Mn R. Gtouldi’ng), captain (Mr A. -Matheson), Mr Renshaw, and Mesdames Maltby, Hanna, and* Miss C. Humphrey's. The players were entertained to luncheon at the Tauranga Hotel, and were afterwards motored to the links on the Gate Pa domain, which is not far. from the scene of tlfe great battle of that name which was fought between the Maoris and European/, 'in the early ’sixties. f The playing conditions were* somewhat. heavy for good golf, although the. fairways were in good condition. What appeared to trouble the visitors more than anything was that' the greens, almost without except’on., were on the' slope, some* being quite steep ; and in some cases the surface was poorly turfed- with coarse, grass, rendering putting from 'above the hole more or less a matter of chance rathen than of skill." The' Tauranga Club, however, is to be congratulated on having such a fin.e nine-hole course', and also on its decisive victory against- the Paeroa team. Following are- the scores, Paeroa players being -mentioned first in each instance :— Ladies.—Misses Walmsley and Tierney lost to Mrs Hanna and -Miss Humphreysj, 6 and 5 ; Mesilamcs Silcock and Hubbard lost to Mrs Maltby and M'ss Goodyear,, 6 and 5 ; M- r s Edward's and Miss G.
