On Saturday last the Paeroa Rugby Union took ho less than four, football teams to Tauranga. where inter-union and inter-school matches were played. In each instance the home team ga'ped a victory. Heavy rain fell during the. greater part of the afternoon, and a fairly stiff easterly wind prevailed l , but the grounds were in good playing condition. The prncipal attraction was the senior representative match, which was played on the No. 1 field ,ajt the. domain. Tauranga fielded the heavier team, and for the first half easily bold their own,, but in the second half t ie Paeroa team made a greatly improved showing. The game elided in. favour of Taufanga, the scores being. ,8 points to 6. For, some reason, the time in the second spell was cut down by four minutes, and while not grudging the home team its victory Paeroa was having the better of the game when time was called, and tlife extra few minutes’ play m'ight, have resulted in Paeroa winning the match. Tawraga won the toss and Masters carried or. from the kicK-off into the home team’s twenty-five, where a scrum was ordered. Paeroa’s advantage wasj lost by Johnson being offside and Turner, cleared to the halfway flag. The throw-in went to Locked, to Watene, to Mcßae, and back to Rare, who fa'led to take the pass and Leslie kicked out at halfway. Tu Tangitu received from the line-out and passed to Phelan, who mulled the ball in Paeroa In a bout of tight play Tauranga was awarded a penalty, but Tu Tangitu missed with tlie kick. In loose play Leslie took the ball on the full and passed to Tu Tangitu, who sent it ojit at the corner.. From the line-out the ball passed from Tu Tangitu to Leslie to Phelan to Faulkner, who was well tackled on the line and Lockett cleared with a long kick. The Tauranga forwards again attacked, but Widen,e and Me Rae relieved to midfield. A pass l.y Neil from a line-out was intercepted by Turner, who lost the ball near the corner. From the line-out the ball went over, the line for Rare to force. In a forward rtiSfh headed by Manse] and Turner a lot. of ground was gained before I. Tangitu received a high pass and dived over the line. Tu Tangitu converted. Tauranga 5. Paeroa 0. Loose play followed in neutral territory, both side's handl’iig the .ball well. Poland received in a line-out at halfway, but was checked by Leslie, and a scrum followed in Tauranga’s twenty-five from which Tu Tangitu carried to Paeroa territory. Kelly intercepted a p.are and made; a good run before sending to Mansel, who found the lin.e in Paeroa’s twenty-five. A good, movement from the line-out saw Forst break through, but .he was well tackled by Faulkner, who cleared. Southby broke' awiay and sent to. Masters, to Smart, a nice movement ending in the ball going out in Tauranga’s, territory.

From tihe kick,-out in the second quarter Mansel broke away and passed to I. Tangitu, but Mcßae' intercepted and sent on to Lockett, to Watene. The latter dropped the pass and Faulkner cleared ta the line in his own twenty-live. The throw-in went to 1. Tangitu, but Neil .collared well and a speculator by Mans,el saved from a difficult position. Good work by the Paeroa forwards frequently tini'ned defence into attack, but the home vanguard played with great dash, especially when op the defensive, and for the balance' of the quarter play was principally confined to the centre' of the field 1 .

On resuming after half-time the kick-out went, to Turner, .who sjet his backs going, but the -advance was effectively checked by Masters, who transferred play to Tauranga’e twenty-five line. Warner secured from the; linemut and passed to Tu Tangitu, Who dribbled? up the field for Mansbl. who was following ip, support, to gather in and score a good try. The kick by Tu Tangitu struck the bar. Tauranga 8. Paeroa 0. In ,a loose rush the ball went to the I'ne in Tauranga’s territory. Following tve line-out Warner, Was penalised, but Watenri’s kick was unsuccessful. Man.sel and Turner gainted a lot. of ground, but Rare' cleared with a well placed kick. Play again, worked into Paeroa’s twenty-five, until Watene cleared 1 to midfield. Following a couple of scrums, near the halfway line, Hamilton headled a forward rush and 1 entered the home team’s territory, where Bickers committed a breach whicr resulted in Mcßae kicking a fine goal. Tauranga 8, Paeroa 3. The; kick-out went to Rare, who transferred to Lockett, to Mcßae, to Watene, the latter finding the line at the cornerSmart received' from the line;-o.ut, and he passed to Watene', to Masters, to McQuarters, who dashed over near the corrfer. Mcßae failed to convert. Tauranga 8, Paeroa 6. In the final round the players livened 1 up and the teams.were more; even. In tight play Warner was injured; and was replaced by T. Pearson. A fine forward rush, headted by Frost and Poland, looked dangerous, but. a combined movement by Leslie and Turner checked the' advance. However, Rare fielded the ball well and found the

line with a long punt. Following th*e line-out Paeroa was penalised while on. the defence, and Tu Tangitu had an ■unsuccessful shot at goal. Tight play resulted in McQuatters forcing. McRae; kicked out. an,di a forward rush made matters look serious for Tauranga until Phelan picked up in the tight and sent to Turner, to Leslie; to Keno. Several other home forwards, joined issue and play was carried back to Paeroa’s territory, whejre Frost stopped the rush. J'he Paeroa forwards then massed and a further determined effort was made to score, when the ball Tell into the hands of Kelly, who found the line. The game ended with. Paeroa on the attack. ■Mr H.
