EASTERLY GALE.
HEAVY RAIN AT PAEROA. NO DAMAGE REPORTED. Following several days of bright, line weather, .a change in local conditions took place on Friday last, and a dull and overcast. sky terminated in several light showers of rain during the njglit. On Saturday morning the barometer, iffad fallen several points, and before 9 o’clock a strong easterly wind sprang up and heavy rain fell, continuing with varying intensity throughout the day. Sim'lar conditions prevailed yesterday, and the wind increased to. the force of a gale. This morning further, heavy rain fell, and all the low-lying areas in the town are once again"inundated. From 9 a.m. on Saturday until 9 o’clock this morning the rainfall, as registered at the local office of the Public Works Department, was 1-15 inches. This morri'ng. with, the wind changing; to .a south-easterly direction., the temperature dropped two degrees, anil now stands at 54. The barometer this morning was unsteady at 29.85 inches,.
The Ohinemuri River has risen several feet since yesterday afternoon, while the W.aihou Rivter at the Ngahina wharf is in a fair flood, having risen a little over five feet, since late last night. Very heavy rain is being experienced up-coun.try, and both rivers shoiv signs of rising still further. Tlie s.s. Taniwha e.ached the Puke from Auckland early th's monu,ing. She received a severe buffeting while crossing the, Firth of Thames, but once the Waihou Riven was entered a good passage was made. The electric power lines and the telegraph lines have so far escaped damage;, and all services are working normally. Weather conditions are still unfavourable. -
