BONELESS VEAL.
NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION. SCHEME ADOPTED AT TURUA. The National Dairy Association';: scheme for the co-operative- marketing of five-day-old calves was explained by a representativte of t.ne association, Mr V. E. Masters, to a meeting at Turua, Kerepeehi, and Netherton settlers at Turua on Fr j da,y last. Mr A. H. Rogers, chairman of directors of tlie Hauraki Plains Cooperative Dairy Company, who has beien interested in the project for some time-, was appointed to preside. Mr Masters statexji that the scheme had be'en iu operation 'n the South Island, where farmers had received a return of 9s per calf. The National Dairy Association was taking up the matter in the North Island on cooperative; lines. The organisation would be by small local committees, whose fiuty would be to organise and supervise the cartage of cahie.s to the railway station. All other arrangements would be made by the National Dairy Association. It had guaranteed ■am advance payment, of 8s per calf if the' charge for cartage to the freezing works was less than Is. per head. In the Turua district, where cartage to the railway and freight to the feezing works .would be, somewhat costly, the advance payment would probably be 7s 6d per calf. It was considered that the bonus .would be Is 6d or 2s when the pool was cleaned up.
There was a steady an.d: growing market for veal, anfii the prices for calf skins were satisfactory, so the prospects for the industry seemed very bright. Calves must, be five days old 1 , and .must be nourished before sent to the freezing works, a,s only healthy calves would, be accepted. Payment would be made by the National Dairy Association through 'dairy companies. Calves would not be gradted, and payment would- be on a, flat. rate. Experience in. the South. Island had shown, that as less than five per cQnt of the calves condemneid it was not worth while going to the trouble or, expense of branding calves. The losg wo-uh]! be; so small, as .the skin, bones', etc., could be utilised, that it could bte borne- by the pool. Cartage contractors would bo required to reject immature calves. 'Mr W. Madgwick movecl that the scheme; be adopted, apid that a committee be set up. to organise and supervise the cartage contracts. This was seconded by Mr C. Dale and carried. Mr, Rogers suggested that the area be between the gulf arid Awaiti and the two rivers. -He thought that thte larger the district the cheaper should be the cartage. Mr Madgwick suggested that a committee of five be appointed, representing Neth'ertqn, Huirau Road, Tur.ua. Shelly Beach, and Kerepechi.
•Mr H. Hcks moved in that drection. and Mr J. Law seconded. This was carried'.
Messrs A. H. Rogers, J. Law, W. Mad'gwek, E. A. Chester, and W. McDuff wore appoined tlie committee.
