PROGRESS DURING JUNE. COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The following repoit by the Works Committee was submlitted to Thursday’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council :— -MAINTENANCE. “During, the past month general maintenance work has been carried out by the staff, comprising footpath dressing, street patching, and drain cleaning. Tlie grader is also being entirely reconditioned, and is pow practically as. good as new. Arrangements are being made for completely overhauling and reconditioning the two bitumen tanks so that they will be ready for service when the fine weatfier season comes round. MAIN HIGHWAYS. “Work on the main highways during the nionth has- been entirely confined to Puke Road Culvert, which has been completed. The gap in the bitumen surface brought into line with the remainder of this section, and the street again opened for traffic. The result is a distinct and permanent improvement to this borough. Stocks of chips are being acquitted in readiness for the sealing work, and -20 tons of bitumen, ex ship, has arrived. RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT. “Detail estimates have been prepared on the authorisation of last meeting, these being immediately submitted to the Public Works Department, and the Minister wired 1 permission to commence work on June 24. It was commenced on the following day, and nine married men have already been found work, in> addition to those who have ben put on at the quarry.” The method of tapping metal chips was referred to by Cr. Turnp-r. He urged that when metal was dumped on the sides of streets it sho.uld be stacked neatly out of the- way of traffic. The way the metal was scattered over Wharf Street ,w'as- most unsaisfactory. He .would ask the works comm’ttee to note his point. •

Cr. Edwards drew attention to the fact that there were several small holes 'appearing in the bitumen on parts of Old Te Aroha Road. The Mayor said that patching of the bitumen surfaces, was being undertaken at present, and the road referred to Would receive attention. The report was adopted.
