The final games in the first round' of. the Frank Poland Memorial Cup competition were played on Saturday afternoon, and the Sharebrokers} Cup games were also advanced a further stage.

The attraction locally was the senior game played between the Paeroa and Piako representatives. The weather wa.s fine and. the ground in fair order, and the provision of seating accommodation and planks on which to stand was much appreciated by the large crowd of spectators who assembled at the domaJin. For a representative senior match the game was rather ' disappointing, although there were flashes of bright play among the home backs. The visitors had the. heavier team, and the forwards were superior to the local vanguard and in tile-scrums got the ball on every occasion except three. The; game was fairly fast and open, and. in defeating Piako by 21 points to 3 great credit must be given to the Paeroa back--, who gave a good all-round display of combination and free' handling of the ball. Southby kicked off against the wind, the ball being returned by Mace for Raii’q to .seHi'd to the li.ne in Piako’s twenty-five. Fyfe; received in the line-out, and in a dribbling rush play went to Paeroa’s corner. Tight play folio,wed 1 , until Mcßae marked, and cleared. After five minutes’ play the first scrum was, ordered. Piako hooked the ball and Munro’s kick was taken by Masters, who marked. With a long, kick Riddell took play into Paeiroa’s territory, where a live-yards scrum cvetuate'd. Watene secured and shortpunted for Lockett to gather in nicely and pas,s to Mcßae, to Frost, who sent to the line in Piako’gi twenty-five. Wallace broke away, but was wc|ll grassed by Polan 1, who- kicked to Lockett, buthe dropped; the ball. McRae gained possession and crass-kick-ed to Watene, to Smart, who scored, in the corner, Watene failed with the kick. Paeroa 3, Piako 0. Piako had the advantage during the quarter, but laqkcd. finish. The second quarter opened with Paeroa on the attack, and Southby missed a penalty kick. After a, couple of scrums; in neutral territory Nield passed' to Watene, who kicked across to Poland, forjitm. to send a long pass to Lockett, who made a good run but was pushed out at the corner, a line-out saw a nice passing bout by the Paeroa, backs, and in tight, play Hamilton scored a good try bet,ween the posts-. Mcßae failed to convert. Paeroa 6, Piako 0. From the kick-out Towel’s S°t away, closely followed by- McLaren; but Lockett marked. His kick was blocked and a Paeroa forward- committed a breach, but Campie failed' to score with the kick. In a loose rush Frost carried play into Piako’s quarter, but Lipsey stopped the advance and sent out near the half-way flag. Johnson received from the throw-in and. made a good run before transferring to Frost. .Mace intercepted 1 , however, and. sent back to Williams, who' clea red to neutral territory.

On resuming after half-time the kick-out went to Paciroa’s ; twelnty-five. After, several .scrums in midfield Piako carried across to the corner, where a scrum w;a,s ordered five yard > out. in tight, play Mcßae forced. Piako returned with a fine forward rush, but the advantage was nullified by Riddell kicking over the dead-ball line. After clos;e. play in neutral territory Hamilton was caught offside in hi;} own twenty-five, but Ca.mpie failed to score. Maloney retired! and was replaced by McQuartcrs. A scrum at halfway enabled M'a r sters ; ' to send Poland away, blit Mace intercepted} and sent on to McLaren,'to Williams, who failed with a drop-kick at goal. Poland stopped a forward rush and sent Masters away, the ball tl'e-o travelling along the. line of backs. Hamilton upset the movement by over-eagerness and Williams cleared to neutral territory.

The final quarter sa,w Piako hard on the attack, and a nice forward rush ended in L'ipsey scoring at the corner. Towers, failed to convert, paeroa 6, Piako 3. Johnson broke away and gained a lot of ground, but Towers saved with a long kick. Lipsejy carried on, and tight play on Paeroa’s line terminated, in a five-yards scrum, from which Masters; sent to Watene to clear. From a line out tlie' ball tnavfelled across the field from Masters; to Mcßae, to Lockett, to McQuarters, who scored a great try 'in the cor-nc-ir. Mcßae failed to convert. Paeroa 9, Piako 3. Southby gathered in nicely, and after beating a couple of opponents sent a well judged kick to the line'. In tight play near halfway Watene drop-kicked a beautiful goal. Paeroa 13, Piako 3. Loose play in Paeroa’s, twenty-five terminated in a free kick to Piako which went to Frost, who cleared; Mcßae made a

great run from his own twenty-five. After beating a, number, of men the passed to Lockett, who returned the ball over the head of the full-back to Mcßae for him to score a most spectacular try near the posts. Mcßae converted. Paeroa 18, Piako 3. in the*blosing stages of the game the homte forwards made a. final dash, and in a scramble Southby dived over the line. The kick failed, and the’ game ended in .Piako’s twenty-five with the scores Paeroa. 21, Piako 3. Mr N. Emmett (Waihi) was referee. After the match the visitors were the guests of the local union at dinner at the Commercial Hotel. PRIMARY SCHOOLS MATCH. As a curtain-ra'ser the first game this season under the, Thames Valley Primary School’s Association was played for the W. Fleming Shield between Paeroa and Wajhi schools.. Considerable interest was taken, in the match, which was. a really good exhibition of Rugby. The boys showed that they had a sound knowledge of the; game, and their, tactics delighted the spectators. It was a. closbly contested match, and ended in a viictory for Paeroa by the narrow margin of one point, the scones being Paeroa 9. Wai hi 8. For Paeroa tries were scored by W. Smith (2) and Coxhead, while StacQ scored, and converted a try for Waihi and Hubn also score.l. Mr E. Smith was referee.
