HOSPITAL FOR PAEROA.
DEPUTATION AGAINST ERECTION.
MINISTER’S FIRM STAND.
A deputation from the Thames Hospital Board consisting of Messrs, w. E. Hale (chairman) J. W- Danby, E. Walton, W- C. Kennedy, and P. E. Brehan waited on the Minister of Health (the Hon. J. A. Young) at Hamilton on Wednesday. Our readers will, be familiar with the controversy and the attitude taken up by the Various members of the Hospital Board, and also with the reol.utions passed deferring the erection of the building.
Mr W. E. Hale said that the bo.ard was concerned by the statement of the Director-General, of Health that he purposed having the institution built and charging the cost to the board. The majority of the board deemed the time inopportune to embark on the undertaking.
Messrs Walton and Danby also spoke against the erection of the building, while Messrs Brenan and Kennedy put forward a plea, for the establishment of the hospital. Replying to the deputation, Mr Young said that the bo.ard held in trust the property and money required for a. brick building, and there was a declaratory judgment of the Supreme Court in 1923 entering its erection. A good maternity service was essential in rural districts. “Public maternity hospitals are not expected to pay,” said Mr, Young. “To long for money profit from them would be against the principles of our hospital system. We, aim to give service, not to make mopey, and I am surprised that a hospital board should advance that issue as an argument. If a hospital, board was stifling maternity work it was n-ot carrying out its social duty to the community in a proper fashion.
“I request your board,” continued Mr Young, “in the terms of your trust to proceed with the erection of a ma.ternity hospital at Paeroa, and desire that it be built of brick, not of wood. If the board fails to recognise what is its duty to the community, and refuses to act, I shall have no option but to order the erection of the building, have it conducted by my. department, and charge yoh with the COSit.” -
