AN OLD OFFENDER.
DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. SHORT TERM OF IMPRISONMENT. A pitiful sight was presented by Joseph Hourigan, an aged labourer, when he appeared at the local Police Court before-Messrs F. E. Flatt and E. Edwards, J’s.P., yesterday morning, charged with being ;a,n idle and <l-’s-orderly person having insufficient lawful means of support, and also with being drunk in Paeroa on- Monday evening. He pleaded gui-lty to. both charges. Constable McC.linchy stated! that accuse:!, who 'had several previous convictions, had boon arrested by Constable Dawson in a state of drunkenness in Belmont Road on Monday evening. Accused, who was ill-clad, had no money, and if he was released in his present state the cha.nces were that he would die from exposui|c. He Ua<! received an order 'for 5s from a business man with which to obtain lodgings, and a meal, and had also received money from other local, people W-hieh he had spent on Liquor. The order was still in his possession when he was arrested. He was in a low state of he.alth, and had. been ill, in the cells that morning. In answer to the Bench accused said that he had been workiiilg on the Waihi-Whangamata. road. He had spent all his money, but had a swag at the railway station. He ha.d pros.pects of further wor.k with the Public Works Department, but he contended that his case was one requiring medical attention rather than gaol. Constable McClinchy said that he was loath to send 1 any old man to gaol, but it would be unfair to the public to release him. If he was committed to gaol he would receive a good clean-up, whc'lesome food, and. if necessary, medical attention.
In order to give effept to the wishes c»t the police accused was convicted and sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment at the Thames gaol on the charge of being idle and disorderly, and was convicted and discharged for bei.nlg drunk. The Bench recommended that he be kept unffer observation and receive mewlical attention .if necessary.
