FLOODING OF ROAD.

POSITION NEAR WAITOKI.

•' EXPLANATION BY ENGINEER.* At Thursday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council it was stated by Cr. C. E. Mace that a portion of the Paeroa-Te Aroha main road near Waitoki had become flooded dur ing last week’s storm, and six cars to his knowledge had been held up. drew attention to the fact that a resolution had been parsed many months ago authorising the engineer to have the lowest portions filled up' with earth, but up to the present nothing hacl been done. It was of little use passing resolutions unless, the engineer saw that the work was don|e. The filling required to be put -down during the summer, and it was too late to do much now that the winter set in. y In answer, to the chairman the engineer (Mr, L. E. Shaw) said he remembered- the resolution being passed, but it had not beep, given effect to for <ihe simple reason that he had neither the plant nor the staff. Furthermore, there had been more important work to be done at the time. The matter -had not bqen allowed to slide, but circumstances were such that the filling could not. be undertaken at the time. The chairman said he was quite

satisfied that the engineer was, not to blame. Cr. F. C. Hubbard agreed. Cr. W. F. Johnstone remarked that the explanation by the engineer might be all right, but ain assurance was -Wanted that the filling would be atZtended to. In Cr. Hubbard’s opinion, the riding •member was to blame for. not seeing that the work was done at the time. It should have been, an easy matter for Cr. Mace to have, obtained ain estimate of the cost, and ty le work would then have been carried out. Cij|j|lace said that lie jvould accept the responsibility of seeing that the work was done as soon as thq weather was suitable.
