WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
PROGRESS DURING THE MONTH. ENGINEER’S REPORT. At last Thursday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council the following report was received from the engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw :— ....“Kaimanawa Ridiiig.—Tenders were called for cleaning 358 chains ofdrains in this riding, the work being let in five separate contracts. As. satisfactory prices were received, the work has been, let and is now proceeding, with the, exception of the drain from the Kaimanawa wharf to the railway. The contractor for. this di;aini, hayipg made a mistake in tendering, has decided that he cannot ,do the work for the pried submitted. The Maratoto Mine road is again in a very bad state, several slips and washouts having occurred during, the recent storm. “Waihi Riding.—The metalling of Pukewera Road is progressing satisfactorily, approximately two-thirds’ of thei wor;k being completed. Repairs to Trig Roadi bridge have been carried out During the month a letter was received from Mr j. G. Heard) requesting that repairs be made to a bridge on Tiernoy’s Road. On> inspecting same I found' that two stringers on the up-stream side have fallen away, and as the whole bridge is an old bush structure, and it very bad repair, it will be necessary to replace it with a nejw bridge. Mr Heard has himself made some repairs, butas they are. of a very temporary nature I> have; placed a notice warning the public that the structure is unsafe. “W.aitckauri Riding.—With reference to Scobbie’s bridge and the road t 0 Mr P. Magrjussen’s property, I wish to state that I have inspected both. The bridge, requires twelve deck planks and new wheel guards; otherwise it is in good order. “The, road to Mr. Magnus|sen’s property is an Bft formation 120 chains in length, and through not being in. use during the last two years is overgrown with blackberries from end to end. There aire also several slips and washouts.: I would recommend the counci,! to accept Mr Magnussen’s offer for doing this work. “Waikino Riding.—The reconditioning of the Waikino, water supply main is being carried' out. The powei* connection at Mr Nicholl’s property has been done away with, and the supply now shows a general improvement. A further eight lengths of pipe and two valves are required to complete the work. “Paerba Riding.—Ordinary maintenance has been carried out in parts of this riding. The shoulder on the bank < f Cadman Road drain has been gradfed off, and the drain iej now ready for cleaning.
“Karangahake Riding.—Timber for repairs to two bridges is on! the ground, and this work will be 'carried out immediately. Advantage was while the grader and roller working in the vicinity to haive the formation of the Tirc/hia Station . road ploughed, regraded, and rolled in readiness for the metal.
“Main Highways.—Most of the time during this month has been) given to the Paeroa-Waitoki section of the Hamilton-Paeroa main highway.
Shoulders have been grade-1 1 in, and additional metal put on and blinded and rolled. The pumice portion has also been graded and rolled. All other main; highways have had the usual maintenance.”
