Kerepeehi 6. Turua won by default. THIRD-GRADE. West 11. v. East 8. SCHOOLBOYS: Ngatea 8, v. Turua 0. The Paeroa Rugby Union competitions were continued on/ Saturday. From 3 o’clock the afternoon was fine, but the weather was threatening and undoubtedly affected the attendance of the public. Tlie principal attraction at the local domain was the s.enior match between East and Pirates. The latter ,was the 'heavier team, and gave a very fair, exhibition of the code in the first half of the match, especially in the backs, but in the second half t'he players seemed to lose their dash and their, opponents had the better of the game. East took the field with only ten men, but prior to the kick-off four more players, went on, and the remaining vacancy was filled, during the first quarter. At half-t’me the score was Pirates 6. East O', but in the third quarter East scored 11 points and in the closing stages of the game registered another try. The teams, were as follows —

East kicked off for Goonan t'o return, and tight followed in East’s twenityrfive until Wilkinson cleared from, a mark. Fitch and Tregoweth followed up, and the latter passed to Johnson,, who was collared on the line anil a force resulted. A period of even play followed until a scrum was or;lered near the halfway line. An East player.was penalised for obstruction, but McCarroll’s kick was unsuccessful. A period of tight play followed until McCarroll broke away and sent out to Coldicutt, who scored near, the corner. McCarroll failed with the kick, P’rc.tc3. 3, East 0. In the second quarter Pirates carried up, and McNeil’s, dive for the line was'frustrated by Treanor. A couple of five yards scrums were ordered! in front of the posts, and play was: tight unt'l East gained relief with a free kick., Not to be denied, Goonan headed a loose rush and then passed to Smai;t, who cross-kicked to Lockett. Beating three backs, Locket scored a beautiful try between! the posts. Mel". Carroll failed to convert. Pirates; 6, East 0. G Morrow started a good for* ward rush, and the ball was quickly carried up to within a few yards of the posts. A score looked certain, but Wilkinson cut in and relieved by kicking to the line.
On resuming after half-time E. Moore - followed up his kick, and in tight play Pirates forced. A series of high kicks followed, until Treanor and Johnson worked play into Pirates’ twenty-five. McCarroll took the ball offside when in front of the posts, and E. Moore, converted the resulting penalty kick. Pirates 6, East 3. East resumed the attack, Treanor and Johnson -making a great rush to the line, but in the scramble which followed the ball went to the dead-ball line. In loose play a Pirates forward was penalised' and, Rackham kicked a good goal from near the halfway line--Pirates 6, East 6. Pressure was again applied by East, and tight play ensued in front of the posts. The ball shot out to H. Moore, who kicked across, the field. Rackham gained possession and passed in to N. Neil, to Fitch, the latter scoring between/ the posts. E. Moore converted!. East 11, Pirates 6. In the final quarter East again attacked, and following a line-out in Pirates’ twenty-hve Treanor gained possession and scored at the, corner. Rackham failed to convert. East 14, Pirates 6. Mr W T. Jonas was referee. WEST V. SUBURBS. The West v. Suburbs, match was | Played at Hikutaia. The ground was in fair order, but a little soft after the recent rain. West kicked off and soon attacked, xbut Mcßae and his men soon caused play to swing back to mid-field. The first quarter was very even, ani.l re;sulted in no scojife In the second quarter West opened up the scores. Verrain from about halfway carried the bail to the homo team’s t.wenty-five, where a scramble ensued from which Poland emerged with the leather. He made a good opening and then transferred to Taylor, who dived over thq line. Dean failed to .convert. West 3, Suburbs 0. A little later Mcßae, the suburbs cap - tain, had to retire, and he was replaced by Potter. Overall, West’s fullback. received a knock on t'he head and also had to retire-.
The third quarter was evenly contested, and neither side could; spore. When the last round ivaU about half over T. Bennett, who had been playing a. good game, made a nqat openr ing and kicked 'high well into West’s territory. Dean fielded the ball, but took things too easily,- and R. Rare, following up well, dived into Dean, who lost the ball over the, line and Rare quickly touched down. West 3, Suburbs 3. Play from then on was, veiry keen, and both teams made great efforts to secure a lead, but could not, and the game ended in a draw. Mr E. Smith jvas referee.
' THE JUNIOR GAME. The junior, game attracted fair attention, and oh, the play East had hard luck in not reversing the result. The teams were evenly matched, and the game was fast and even. In the opening stages of the game East went on the attack, and from tight play S. Tress.ider. scored a good try. S. Williams failed with the kicldA East 3, West O'. • ' The opening kick in the second round was returned by the East forwards in. a dribbling rush as far as Masters, who marked and cleared. Play then went to the other end of the field, and P. Poland scored a good try., which 'he also converted.. West 5, East 3. S. Williams relieved from . a strong attack-by West with a line kick, but in the resulting loose plajJ Poland secured and dived over the, line. His kick was again, successful. West 10, East 3. Shortly after, half-time Mead secured from a scrum and set his backs going for Wilkinson to scone. Williams failed to convert. West 10, East 6. West then attacked, and in a scramble Gage crossed the line. Poland failed with the kick. West 13, East 6. A penalty followed the kickout in a handy position for Poland to score, but he failed to convert. Shortly after the commencement of the final round the East forwards broke away from a scrum near the halfway line for. Douglas to score a good try. Williams convened. West 13, East 11. From the- kick-out the East forwards attempted a rush, but Flatt was caught offside alnd Poland, kicked a fine goal. West 16, East Evein play followed until the end of' the game. Mr T. C. Arnold was referee. THIRD-GRADE MATCH. As a curtain-raiser to the senior match the East and’ West third-grade i teams, played a very even game, the I result being a victory for West by 11 point? to 8. For the winners tries were scored by L. Ver.ran, M. Irwin, and Johnson, one of which was eonr verteid. For East P. Grant an|d F. Dare each scored a try, one of which was converted ty C. 'Ward. Mr G.
