DRAINAGE BOUNDARY.
THE KEREPEEHI AREA.
REPRESENTATIONS FROM ELSTOW
Mr M. A. Carter, a- member of the Elstow Drainage Board-, again l waited upon the Hauraki United Drainage Board at its meeting ’on. Friday last with reference to the suggestion to alter the boundary between! the two districts near Kerepeehi. He explained that since the previous meeting he had reported to his board and had conferred with the lands drainage engineer on, the proposal to alter the existing boundary to the watershed. The stumbling block yas- the Racecourse drain. Mr Peterson, the landowner affected, was agreeable to cliosing that drain. In the event of the Hauraki United Board objecting to this a flood-gate could be installed on the southern s'de of the Racecourse drain entrance to the Awaiti Canal catchment -drain, and a short length- of stop-bank erected at a cost estimated by Mr E. Taylor at £l3O. If a subsidy could be collected and. the cost divided equally between the two boards the cost to each would be £4O-; odd. Along the Pekapeka road the sections on the watershei coujld be divided in two by the new boundary line, gome of the settlers had been’ approached and were agreeab|le, and therefore the line 'of the boundary could probably be fixed amicably by mutual arrangement. Mr J. M. Thompson raised the question of the need for an alteration in the boundaries at all.
Mr Carter pointed, out that if water came from outside a drainage board's area that board could rate the land outside its area for the cost of dealing with the foreign water.. In the present case the water from the Hauraki Board’s hill area flowed down the Racecourse drain and' along the Awaiti Canal catchment area to the Elstow Board’s area, where it had to be pumped; over the stop-bank into the canal.
The chairman stated that the matter wou;ld be considered and, the decision, communicated to the Elstow Board. Mr Carter said that his board was willing to make the boundary the Pekapeka and Wairdu roads and the road from the Kerepeehi corner to the Keeepehi wharf. After Mr Carter had withdrawn it was agreed! that an inspection of the area would have to be made.
