KEREPEEHI SPORTS.
EASTER MONDAY’S GATHERING. MEETING HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL. All Hauraki Plains roads led to Kerepeehi on Monday last, and almost 3000 people passed through the gates of. the showground to the annual Easter Monday sports of the Kerer peohi Sports Association. Good weather and attractive, clean, keenlycontested events in- a varied programme provided a good l day’s enjoyment, so that the success of the meeting was apparent. The organisation wag excellent, and the programme and time-table were followed with only minor alterations to provide events for the public to watch while choppei'ts were preparing their blocks or horsemen were resting their mounts. The, weather was fine, although throughout the day rain appeared imminent and some showers did fall in places, round Kerepeehi. Many- ;people brought lunch baskets and picnicked .in their cars, though the refreshment booth did a big trade and should prove a profitable! undertaking for the association'. A jazz band provided attractive music, although it was late in arriving, and music and news from racecourses were provided by wireless. The track was in. good oijder, as farm implements for three (Jays had been continuously cutting and rolling down the lumps. Spills off horses were numefrous in- those events where mounting was part of the race, but no riders were injured other than. Mr M. O’Connor, of Mangawhere Road, Patetonga, whose horsei fell at the first hurdle in the first event. His collarbone was broken and he was takqn to Turua for. medical attention. The .only other mishap was in the ladies’ chopping event, when Miss. Perry, of Elstow, cut her shoe and shaved the skin off the sidei of her foot with an axe. There were; no protests, and no unpleasantness of any- kind.
The principal officials were as foil lows : President, Mr J. M. Thompson; judges, Messrs J. Hamilton and G. Gray (horse, and foot events), M. Ellis and J. Thomas (chopping events) ; chief steward, Mr W. Shilton ; clqrk of course, Mt. F. Mulgrqw ; calf steward, .Mr J. Newman ;/starters, Messrs W. Thomson and J. A. Bennfett (chopping) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. E. Smith; assistant seeijstary, Mr FStephens.
A great measure of the success and smooth running of the sports is due to the sm,all army Of members of tfiq association, who put in many days’ work in preparing and cleaning up the ground and who accented duties on the flay which did not brinjg them, in the public view but, in many cases, kept them from seeing any of the events. Some fe,w of these mon. will be paid, but the greater number gave their services gratuitously and willingly for the sake of the association and the good it will do their difstrict.
