WATER POLLUTION.
SEWAGE IN WAIHOU RIVER. INVESTIGATION ADVISABLE. Recently there has. beep a great cry from the Chief Health Offices- about the disposal of sewage in the Auckland; Harbour, and it occurs to one that right at our very dooife almost we have a similar offence being created. When. Paeroa put in sewerage diyiinage it was compelled to erect septic tanks to treat the sewage before it was deposited into the Waihou, while Te Aroha, which drains into the same river, is allowed to dump its sewage right into the river. Considering that in the summer time numbers, of people farther dbwn stream are compelled to use the water from the Waihou for culinary purposes it is quite time some, investigation was made. It is claimed that the, sewage wholly disappears and is. not at ajl harmful after travelling a few miles, but the thing remains that users of the water have some hesitation in. believing that it is pure, and wholesome. If it is right and proper foi- Paeroa to first of all drain into a septic tank, then Te Aroha. should certainly do so, and the Chief Health Office shoujld be apprised of the position.
