GOLDFIELDS STARS GAME.
MATAMATA DEFEATS PAEROA. On Saturday afternoon the Paeroa Bowling Club sent a team to Matamata for the purpose of playing for the Goldfields Challenge Stars., at present held by Matamata. Although the local club sent forward a. strong team, the holders finally retained the coveted trophy after a close and interesting game by a win of three points on the last head. The teams were:— Matamata—Oates, Mclntyre, LivStewart (skip).
Paeroa.—W. N. Chamberlain, W. Perston, W. Purdie, J. Pinder (skip).
At the second head both teams were one up, and on the fifth head Paeroa with 5 had a lead of three points. The sixth head also went to Paeroa, but in the following three heads Matamata gained eight points. In the next six heads the holders failed to score," and the position at the 17th head was Paeroa 17, Matamata 11. The 18th head was full of, incident, and under the able generalship of Stewart a five was scored, making the holders’ score 16 to paeroa’s 17. Thq next head also went to Matamata for 3, while Pinder’s team scored a two on the 20th head, making the scores 19 all. Considerable interest was taken in the garfle, and the last head created much excitement. The honours went to Stewart for threei after a hard tussle with Pinder, and thus Matamata rtrained the Stars, the final figures being : Matamata, 22 ; Paeroa, 19. The winners were the recipients of hearty congratulations f rom those present, as also were the "challengers on the good fight they had put up.
