FOOTBALL.
SCHOOLBOY TEAM ENTERTAINED. ROLLER MILLS SHIELD WINNERS. On Saturday afternoon the Thames Valley Primary Schools’ Rugby representative team, winners of the Northern Roller Mills Shield for championship of the Auckland province, assem*-. bled to be photographed, and were later entertained at a complimentary dinner. Unfortunately several members of the team were unable to be present. Gordon Edwards, one of the star forwards of the team, is laid up with the mumps, and was represented at the dinner by his father. After being photographed the boys partook of dinner at Mrs Holes’ restaurapt. Mr J. Insley, secretary, apologised Yor the unavoidable absence of Mr J. Elliot, president of the union. Mr D. McPherson, vice-president, congratulated the team on having ’ won for the second time in succession the Roller Mills Shield. He had seen all the games at Hamilton and complimented the boys upon the spirit in which they had played. He exhorted the boys to play a hard but, fair game always-, not only in football but in everything they undertook. The main thing was to play npt for the sake of shields or cups but for the game and all it meant. >
Luther, the captain, replied on behalf of the team. He thanked Mr McPherson for the things he had said about the team. They had all thoroughly enjoyed the games, and he wished to compliment the Auckland B team, runners-up, on the fine spirit in which they had played. SMOKE CONCERT. An enjoyable smoke concert was held by the Veterans Football Club at the Gaiety Theatre supper-rooms on Saturday night. There ’was a large and representative gathering of footballers and supporters present, including many notable district players of seasons gone by. A number of enjoyable selections were contributed by the Hauraki Orchestra, in addition to items by W. Taylor, T. Chessell, C. H. Potter, and V. Young. In connection with the toastlist, many home truths concerning past and present methods of playing football were mentioned, and the reminiscences, of old players proved, in some cases, interesting and highly amusing.
