CRICKET.

COMPETITION COMMENCES PAEROA B DEFEATS TE AROHA B. The Piako Cricket Association’s 1927-28 competition opened in tine weather on Saturday afternoon, and the first games in the first round were played. This season the Paeroa club has entered two teams in the competition, and on Saturday the local A team journeyed to Mprrinsville, whore it defeated the Morrinsville eleven by seven wickets and 67 runs. The attraction locally was a match between the Paeroa B team and the Te Aroha B te<am. A f ter an interesting and enjoyable game the home side won by 37 runs. Considering that it was the first game of the season for many of the players, and also that the batsmen had to face the bowlers without the protection of batting pads, a really good showing was made.

Thq new concrete pitch played well, but it, puzzled some of the visitors who had not played on concrete before. The Te Aroha team was two players short on arrival, but substitutes were supplied from the local players.

The top scorer for the home side was F. Pivott (19), and he w’as the only player. to reach double figures. A useful inningst was played by W. Sanderson, who carried his bat for 9 runs. Of the- home side no less than seven players were caught out. For the visitors Harrison made top score with nine runs,, and T. Turner was next, with eight. Messrs C. Farrow and J. Rackham were umpires. Following are the details:— PAEROA B. F. Pivott, c Turner, b Tremain .. 19 F. McQuillan, b Tremain 0 H. Cocks, c Holmes, b .. 7 A. Jenkinson, c Holmes, b Turner 2 C. SCHOOL CRICKET. PAEROA DEFEATS KARANGAHAKE. A match resulting in a win for Paeroa Primary by 90 runs to 87 was played at Kerangahakei on Saturday, The Paeroa boys played one man short, which adds credit to their achievement. Unfortunately, owing to a dispute about the scores, it was decided by the Paeroa team to cancel the match as a shield match and play Karangahake again next Saturday for that purpose. Paeroa’s fielding was excellent. Findlay caught two difficult balls- and performed a remarkable long distance throw-in which shattered the, wickets at a critical moment. Roberts, who made 49 runs, Bardsley, Barclay, and Simmonds wore wide awake when catches were given. Shand took six wickets, Mayo six, and Massey Curtist showed up well for future bowling work by taking eight wickets in the game. Hamilton, Hardman, Williams, and particularly Bramble batted well for Karangahake, and Goldsworthy and Hamilton did remarkably well in the bowling.
